I think when a company refers to a AAA project they mean it will get outstanding reviews all round and sell well at the same time.

The latter half is true but the former has nothing to do with the development of the game: AAA just means a game htat they put an enormous amount of resources behind and place bets on it making them a lot of money. Wii Music last year was one of Nintendo's AAA games, but it underperformed for sales.

I dunno, i still think reviews count towards the AAA status personally.

There is no real definition for a AAA game, people just have their own stance on what a game needs to consist of to reach that criteria. The majority though, tend to say reviews are what makes a game a AAA game.

You mean the majority at VGChartz, which adopted the AAA designation (which actually does have a definition in the business world as being a top-tier project in terms of budget and manpower and investment) and applied Metacritic to it.

Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports Resort? Both of those are AAA titles that have sold over a million since Brawl. Ditto Wii Music, though Nintendo wanted more out of that.

Yes actually a AAA rating has always refered to a games review scores, it's only been in the last 5 minutes that the context of the designation has changed to suit Khuutra's preferences.

*sigh*

Look what you make me do, you made me go to Wiktionary

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/AAA

Definition four, if you please

Edit: Reference for that definition is:

Just to clarify one more time: "AAA" meaning 90+ on Metacritic is a colloquialism for VGChartz. In most contexts it refers to budget and sales expectations and has nothing to do with reviews.

Well, in that case...

What was Mario Kart Wii's budget? Or Wii Sports Resort's?

Carl, in the future, if you're gonna use terms like "majority" or "minority" or any type of quantifiable term, you should always have data to back it up.  Like, numbers.  You have to produce data to show how you know that the majority of people prefer this/that or take stance x,y, or z.  Because the next question is always gonna be: "How do you know that?"

Just a lil' something my professor in Research Methods told me.

Which is funny because he's defending using "AAA" as shorthand for a game with a "quantifiable" aggregate score of 90 or above. Saying the definition of a AAA game is one with "a big budget that's expected to sell" is far from definative or concise.
