Forums - Nintendo - Crystal Chronicles--Crystal Bearers: A hit or miss?

This game has received hatred from both fans of the traditional CC series (multiplayer based, little story, etc), and some HD fanboys. The former simply wants the series to continue the trend the DS and Gamecube installments had (excluding Wiiware), while the later just want the game to fail to keep bashing the console, the Wii consumer, bla bla bla.

The team behing the Crystal Chronicles series want the franchise to expand. While popular so far, it has not reached a desired number of gamers and other companies have chances to make a name as the best Wii RPG developer. In my opinion, The Crystal Bearers serves one ot both these reasons of why it's made the way it is:

  1. A test on how to evolve the series to reach a borader audience
  2. A product to finance a framework to a online Crystal Chronicles game (like Phantasy Star Online on DC and GC)

Personally I was never interested in this game from the start, and I would need a great deal of convincing before i even considered buying it.

Therefore I proclaim, it shall be a miss.

On Topic:

An in-between in Japan, a moderate Hit in the West

I think it will be an all around hit, sales will be around a respectable 2 million worldwide when alls said and done

Hit, because its FF

Miss.

I don't see where anybody got the idea that it's westernised (perhaps because it's not a cartoon?), but the reality is it looks like they were too worried about accessibility rather than making a great game.  I was looking for an RPG, but I got an action adventure instead.

I think it'll fall somewhere in between. It won't flop, but I don't think it'll set the charts on fire.

Same here.

The game will probably do alright, more or less close to expectations. It will be well in the range for being made an "example," though - by which I mean, the usual suspects will call it "another flop," would have done better on HD consoles, etc. Then again, looking at MH3, who knows how much these games need to sell to escape such a fate.

Actually, I have no idea what SE expects of the game. I'd be surprised if it hits a million.

none of the previous crystal chronicles have been "definitive hits". they're all modest sellers at best. so expecting this one to be different "because its FF", is ludicrous.

The Crystal Chronicles series has never been a chart-topping series. The best selling CC game to date is the original on the GCN, with 1.38 million in sales. The DS iterations have averaged 500,000 units apiece.

With this being the first full-fledged console Crystal Chronicles, and a 55M console userbase, I expect it to be a modest hit. With anywhere between 2-2.5 million sales.

I don't see this title impacting DQX whatsoever. If I was Square-Enix however, I'd put it on DS. Lower Dev Cost + Higher Sales= More Profit.

I'm not sure what the expectations are either, but I expect it to do over 150k first week and do ~275-300k lifetime.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

Sounds about right, under what I'm expecting of ToG (hopefully).

Oh, when I said a million, I meant WW of course.
