It's not exactly new talk: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Hi-Vision
Of course at that resolution, you'd need a mammoth screen to see the difference. It's actually interesting to note the ridiculous 22.2 channel sound support for this.
I'll buy one... when I win the lottery and have enough room for my own cinema
While it is cool that they are going higher resolution, I doubt it will meet their expected penetration rates. Currently with a 1080p TV you need a 55-75" screen for a 10' viewing distance. With higher resolutions you would be looking at a +100" screen to get any benefit from it. Also, people don't have space for these huge TVs unless they are super rich in the first place or they have a dedicated media room in the basement.

I think 1080p will be around for a while I'd go ahead with the purchase.

This.
Anything higher than 1080p is unnecessary imho. Maybe multi-millionares with their 200 inch UHD TV's in their dedicated entertainment room will see the difference, but I certainly won't.
Now when do we get our 3d TV?
this pretty much sums up the topic: "The market in Europe is expected to hit 5 percent penetration by 2021 and then zip up to more than 28 percent by 2025". when it arrives it will be awesome but it's a long way off and a lot could change in the world before then.
i think holographic display will be with us by then letting us stretch are screen to make it bigger as long as we want to.
but before all that we have to face 21st December 2012
I think there is no need (room) for video games to be in that resolution. At least in Japan people are chosing portables. See NDS and PSP sales.
