Heavy Rain Developer Believes Game Can Still Sell Despite Packed Release Window

Heavy Rain Developer Believes Game Can Still Sell Despite Packed Release Window

11/02/2009 Written by Sebastian Moss

In July it was announced that the highly anticipated Heavy Rain would be delayed past Christmas into the next year, as “it’s not ideal to release a new IP or a new genre just before Christmas”. Guillaume de Fondaumiere stated that “it’s a very crowded place to be, and certain games need more space to live their life.” However, since the delay numerous games, such as MAG, Bioshock 2 and Alpha Protocol, would all be releasing in early 2010. At this year’s Eurogamer Expo in London PlayStation LifeStyle asked David Cage, Quantic Dream’s CEO, and writer and director of Heavy Rain, about his views on the packed release window.

The writer and director replied:

“It seems that many people had the same idea, and it seemed the right spot was definitely Christmas.

Lightening the mood the French developer quipped:

But yeah, well, we got some competition out the way, some games are going to be released at Christmas, I heard.

Referring to Heavy Rain Cage continued:

“But, yeah, you know, if the game is good I think it’s going to sell anyway, so it’s up to us, and we are in this type of strange situation where we try to create our own genre, so we can’t say we really have competition as such, in the same category of game, so we believe it is an interesting position.”

GLAD to see he has confidence

I am interested in its numbers.....but Q1/Q2 is so BIG next year, dominated by the 2 10LB monsters ofcourse (FF13 & GT5).

i think this will sell like Infamous!still million seller!

I dunno if I will buy it, I have enough games already for the first 6 months of 2010, and I am not convinced that Heavy Rain will budge them out.

I am sure I will get it at some point, but it is going to get crowded out. How many gamers I going to decide to go for a very different game when they could get something in their comfort zone, like GoW 3, FF XIII or GT 5?

I hate to say this because the game looks great, but I don't see huge sales for this game. I see 700k-1.1M LTD. I could be high, I could be low, let us hope it's the latter.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

with money as tight as it is, I really don't see people buying this game along with or over gow3 ff13 and or gt5

I am one of these people, I'll wait for reviews and if its 8+ ill buy it when its 30$

1-1.5mill is about all I'm expecting. Regardless, I think Quantic Dream has the potential to be another Team Ico in their efforts with PlayStation.

But aren't they 3rd party?

@Munkeh111

same here, I WANT THIS.....but I may wait till its cheaper.

I believe it'll still sell decently. I know I'll be picking it up whenever they decide to release it.

They should release during the summer drought. That time can always use some rain.

8+?what would you do if its higher than FF XIII,GT5 and GoW3?Heavy Rain is gonna be an awesome game...expect a AAA game!

i for one am buying this game. i could care less about Bioshock 2, MAG or GT5. This game is going to go nicely with GOW3, FFXIII, ME2, WKC, Resonance of Fate, and maybe Alpha protocol next year. Man all the game to get...my poor poor wallet ='(
