Forums - Sales - Has the 360 turned the corner in North America?

I never thought I would see the 360 outselling the Wii in late October. I figured it would have a good two-week run with Halo 3 but the console just keeps on truckin'.

So, is this a trend? Will it last and for how long? When will the Wii reclaim the console crown?

Personally, I think it is a trend. I think that BioShock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Splinter Cell, and others will drive NA 360 sales through spring until GTA IV hits (when I think we'll see another price cut). Overall, I think things look very good for the 360. I think the 360 can run neck-and-neck with the Wii until at least the end of the year, mainly based on Nintendo's overall supply problems because they are so strong in every market while Microsoft can focus mainly on the North American market for its console deliveries. If MS is lucky with the Arcade, it might even be able to run with the Wii until the end of February or so.

What do you guys think? Trend, Halo, or both? Will it last? When will the Wii retake the crown?

Yep, yep, 360 has turned the corner in N.A. Barely outselling Wii with no big games in past weeks. :p

And for the "running neck against neck" for the rest of the year. It all depends from Nintendo's part

manufacturers: can they get enough of those parts to the Wii's assembly factories ? ;)

Nothing's cheaper than something free.

F1 vs FOTA, when too much power is in couple peoples hands.

We have to see what happen when Halo3 sales are exhausted.
It is a bit early to think the Xbox360 will keep her momentum for the next 6 months.

And if you think the "Xbox360 arcade" can handle the Wii for this Xmas then you never played to Viva Pinata ...

Time to Work !

I really, really, really wish that just for once, everyone would read what an OP typed.

Yep, seems like alot of peeps read a couple lines and go right for that REPLY button!

PS360 ftw!

Currently playing..........

Gears of War 2, GTA IV Lost and Damned, Little Big Planet (Yes I said I had no interest but my girl wanted to try it and we did and now Im hooked )

I don't think it's a trend, but the 360 will be a viable platform for the next few years, if just for the American install base.

The big sales for the 360 at the moment are solely down to Halo 3.  NA is the only region where the Halo 3 effect hasn't worn off yet....but it will.  It has already dropped considerably in Others.  The 360 was selling 40k on average and peaked at around 80k after Halo 3 was released, then dropped to 56k, 42k and now 37k although it looks like the PS3 is taking it's place instead.

The same will happen in NA, apart from the PS3 part.  I expect sales of the 360 to drop considerably after the first week in November (when PS3 pricedrop and new model appear), with PS3 sales going up again.  And then it will be into the Xmas period.

Wii sales will start rising the closer to Xmas we get with 360 sales coming well under 100k and then rising above the 100k again the closer to December it gets.

So in short....no, I don't think the 360 has turned the corner.  I do expect it to sell more than the PS3 in NA for a good while yet, but I do expect the Wii to sell more than the 360 over the same period.

As we have discussed elsewhere.  The 360 can't hold it's own in only one region.  It need to perform well in 2 regions...and seeing as Japan is a no go area, it needs to fight back hard in Europe and take it by the scruff of it's neck to "turn the corner"

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

Wow ... even in the midst of sick Xbox 360 sales, B$3 fanboys will find a way to spin this. LOL ... seriously, the 360 isn't besting my estimates. I predicted the 360 and Wii would duke it out for the top spot - and Sony will orphan the PS3 and work on the PS4 shortly.

I think developers are worried about paying bills and keeping food on the table and the huge attach rate with the 360 is too much to ignore. They are risking house and home by staying on Sony's sinking ship ...

I think it's a trend that will continue through the end of the year.

Simply because of a combination of the strong 360 lineup and the Wii limited supplies.  (Mario Galaxies would cause Wii sales record, except for the fact that they can't produce them any quicker... so it will continue to be 180K per week regardless of game releases).

Come january Wii is back on top.

 imo of course.

Frankly, sales of the 360 have not been terribly impressive this year, not even in the US market. Looking at VGChartz data for Sept 1 to Oct 20, 2007 - the peak of Halomania, during a Wii software drought, and before the PS3's price cut or the release of triple A games like Ratchet - world market share for all home consoles (excluding handhelds, a very different market) by Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft was 37%, 33% and 30%, respectively. US market share during the same period was Microsoft 39%, Nintendo 37%, and Sony 24%.

Run the numbers for all of 2007 to date, and US market share looks like this: Nintendo 38%, Sony 37%, Microsoft 26%. (2007 world market share to date: Nintendo 41%, Sony 40%, Microsoft 19%.)

In its strongest market, with its biggest franchise release, and with a price cut, Microsoft barely outsold Nintendo for one month. That's not exactly hitting the ball out of the park.

The Wii will outedge the X360 this Christmas. Just barely though.

Wii's (bigger) supply, since they'll have a lot + Mario Galaxy = Guaranteed sell outs for the Wii. If I'm to believe Reggie they'll do at least twice as well as last Christmas since they have twice the supply.

The X360 needs to maintain its current momentum to stay neck and neck with the Wii. Luckily it has several recent highly-ranked and big sales games (Bioshock, Halo 3 etc.) It also has the Arcade Bundle, which is an excellent casual Wii clone. Clerks are going to say "Yeah we're sold out on Wiis, but for ONLY $30 bucks more...") So every unsupplied Wii becomes a X360.

Once the year is over though that's it. Nintendo's supplies will be at plenty while the Christmas buzz for the 360 wears off.

Then Smash Brothers Brawl comes out.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

@SlorgNet:

You're showing so many numbers that it's hard to understand which of them you are trying to make a point with.

Regarding Nintendo vs Microsoft, I don't think Microsoft is terribly worried about 360's sales when compared to the fastest-selling console ever... And it certainly doesn't mean that 360's sales aren't impressive now.
