Here is the current sales in japan for 2009 for Wii and PS3 VGChartz Hardware data for the period 04th Jan 2009 to 24th Oct 2009: Console Wii PS3 Japan 1,012,924 1,006,810 So in order to beat the Wii, PS3 will probably have to sell at least 750K over ten weeks

And it'll sell 500k quicker than you can blink once FF XIII hits. Slim launch and this will be comparable. And whats going to boost Wii so much? NSMB?

You think FF XIII will push 500k?? that's a lot... If that's possible in 2 weeks, PS3 will definitely win this year. But I don't think so.

Not just me...Famitsu as well.

'After that though it's pretty barren until FFXIII, while Wii has a ton of surefire sellers in between (Taiko Wii 2, Tales of Graces, Sengoku Musou 3, NSMB Wii, PokePark, Mario & Sonic 2, Crystal Bearers).'.

Surefire sellers eh?

All those games will break at least 200k, they're all pretty much guaranteed that.  At least half will break 300k and couple will break 500k.  The only PS3 games I see doing similarly in the same period are WE2010, FFXIII and maybe Dragon Ball.

I don't think any are necessarily big hardware drivers, but as DS and PS2 have proven, it's not just the big games, it's the stuff in between that keeps you afloat.  A full lineup's more important than one big title on it's own, which is why Wii just recently struggled after MH3.

We may be surprised. It's looking likely that both Bayonetta and Tekken 6 will reach 200k.

Bayonetta and Tekken 6 aren't upcoming releases.  And really, I'd have expected as much from them, there's no real surprise there.

It is not surprising. In 2010 PS3 will win by a larger margin. Everybody knows that Sony launched a console ahead of its time (the cell, blu-ray, free gaming network) , and lost much money because of that. In 2010 they will start to obtain profits through PS3 selling. Multiplats games don't do justice to PS3, because everybody knows 360 is, at the present, the hd console of choice for the majority of developers. This year things started to change in PS3 world (everybody is feeling it, no?) and now it will only get better. Mark my words.

Have to strongly disagree there. Wii is slumping while PS3 I believe is nearing its peak. Nintendo crippled themselves with a severe software drought for the greater part of this year. Won't happen again.. As long as Nintendo keeps the momentum going with more software, Wii will have greater longevity than PS3.

PSP also was beating DS for awhile, but things eventually went back to normal and DS started winning in sales again. it just happens to be an intersection of one console slumping during the same time the other surging. Usually in Japan once a console is picked for the generation, things don't just change out of the blue.

I wouldn't say the PS3 won Japan this year just yet, but, once FFXIII comes out (and we see how much hardware is moved), then I think we can safely call it after that.

Famitsu expected for Tekken 6 to sell 180k maximum in its lifetime. They also expected Bayonetta to sell 160k maximum in its lifetime. I'd consider them surprises.

Ok, so 500K, that's still nowhere near where it needs to be to beat the Wii

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Last year Wii sold over 731K in this time period, this year it'll do at least that, probably more, so even if FF13 pushes 500K, that's still way below what even a conservative estimate of Wii's sales will be

Beating Famitsu's expectations isn't exactly the same as exceeding their own.  And really neither's relevant to the discussion at hand, just like Wii Fit Plus isn't.  I was talking about upcoming releases for the rest of the year... I don't see any potential "surprises" among what's left for PS3 besides what's been mentioned, do you?
