Back then, 3D was everything. Mario and The Legend of Zelda really showcased how 3D games should work. Then Rare was doing the same with their games like Banjo, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark. The few 3rd party developers that the N64 had did the same. It's all about competing for Sales on a platform. This is similar to the situation with the PS3 and Xbox 360. The developers are really focused on the Graphics Engines.

R&D1 did build a prototype "Metroid 64" late in the system's life (around 2000).  It was 3rd person and used an OOT-style lock on.  Project got briefly moved to GC, then killed entirely in favor of Retro's Prime.

3D Graphics aren't 'everything'.  Appealing to all markets with a wide variety of games is, and always has been, the way to run a system.  Its what made the NES and SNES the king and its what is making the Wii and DS sell the best.

I love how honest Nintendo is lately, but i cant stop being worried about it, i thought truth was bad for the business lol

Anyway... they meant the programming process, i think the Nintendo 64 had the best 3D games yet, with a few exceptions it was hard but that made the product even better

Not many, but what it got was generally impressive.  Stuff like Yoshi Story, Wonder Project J2, Mischief Makers, Ogre Battle 64 or Bangai-O looked as good as most of the better stuff on the 32-bitters. 

N64 could've run games like SotN effortlessly if it'd had the format memory for it.  Cart sizes were a huge limit, but in terms of system spec, it could've outclassed PS1 due to RAM alone (4MB unified for N64, also expandable to 8MB, 2MB main /1MB video for PS1) even though it lacked dedicated sprite/scroll hardware/library support.  PS1 was a rather limited 2D machine too thanks to bottlenecks, the only 3rd cycle console with really impressive 2D hardware was Saturn.

this gen been more about appeling the biggest usershare. wii more casual. compared to ps3 or 360

ps3 find it more varied, 360 got tons of fps, rpgs (most shared, racers (most shared)-

wii have good library, but not at the scale both 360 and ps3 have managed to keep third party speaking.

 



There were two things wrong with the N64 hardware.

1) It used cartridges instead of CDs.
CDs have much more data capacity, so primarily textures would have looked much better.

2) It lacked a dedicated sound chip.
Sound was done by the CPU instead of a dedicated sound chip. This means any game with good music or voice acting was putting a heavy load on the CPU, thus lowering framerates among other things.

If these two things would have been fixed, the N64 would have been close to the Dreamcast in power (if we include Expansion Pack that is), and that's no lie.

Imagine Pefect Dark with sharper textures at a constant 30FPS. That would have been possible!

N64 was the best system Nintendo ever created if you ask me. Actually WAY better than the PS1, which I sold pretty fast. Zelda Ocarina of Time, Mario, Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Extreme G etc. etc.

Damn I loved that console.

You do know Metroid wasn't on the 64, right?

Yeah but I forgot because he was suppose to sorry lol.

But that don't change the rest of my claiming I forgot to mention great games.(F-Zero,TLOZ Majora's Mask...)
