Back then, 3D was everything. Mario and The Legend of Zelda really showcased how 3D games should work. Then Rare was doing the same with their games like Banjo, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark. The few 3rd party developers that the N64 had did the same. It's all about competing for Sales on a platform. This is similar to the situation with the PS3 and Xbox 360. The developers are really focused on the Graphics Engines.
