Sony: PlayStation 3 Profitability In 2010                                                                                                                                                                     

I think that 2010 will ACTUALLY be the year of the ps3. 2009 was great, but sony still lost money. When sony actually starts making profit, the console war (360 vs ps3) will finaly begin IMO.

What do you think this will do for Sony?

And what will profitability do for Sony? Make Sony money.

As I understand it the results were a bit better than expected and current trends indicate profitability next year - so basically the results mean 'yuk but getting better'. I doubt they'll matter to the average consumer.

Quite simply: money.

I know that sony will make $$ obviously, I should have rephrased my question differently. I meant, in terms of psn quality, more exclusive games/dlc, more money to use for psp (possible psp2) the options are almost endless. With this profit, what do you think Sony should focus on so that they can come in first in the console war.

They wont become first this gen. No way.

They will be able to throw a bit mroe money around at 3rd parties like MS has done for the entire gen.

Get some timed exclusivity deals maybe, and some exclusive DLC.

More marketting, better PSN.

I suspect that profitability within Sony's gaming division will be short lived being that the money they will soon start to make will have to be funneled into the increasing R&D costs of successors to the PSP and PS3 ... The PS2 was a profit monster, and when profit generated from it was highest (in the years leading up to the PSP and PS3 release) the gaming divisions profitability took a serious hit. It is highly likely that Sony will need to spend $100 to $250 Million per year for each console every year from now until they release it, and possibly $250 to $500 Million the year they release it, to design and licence the technology that will make up the system.

PS3 will be 4 years old by then, somehow i think the console wars began awhile back.
