Forums - Nintendo - What made Super Mario Brothers 3 the greatest game of all time?

@dtewi

You are so wrong in so many levels. Do you really think that no gamer nowadays wouldn't choose a NES or a 2D game over newer games...?

No, because nostalgia has warped everyone's opinion.

How about this: do you really think gamers twenty years ago would choose a 2D game over modern ones?

I remember getting SMB 3 when it first came out. Myself and both my brothers fought over who would get to play it first. Brings back memories. A great game

I recently downloaded this on virtual console and started playing again. It certainly is one of the greatest games of all time for all the reasons you mentioned. Let me just add that it has this level of imagination that no other game has matched. From the tanooki suit to the wild cards placed at the end of each level, it's all just very crazy and also very fun.

To those saying I am nostalgia-induced, well of course I am! But I'm sure that in 20 years we'll all be nostalgia-induced by Uncharted and Super Mario Galaxy too.

@dtewi

You can't answer that question, because if 20 years ago we had the games that we have now, then those same games would have been nostalgia, as you put it, right now.

Also, why do you use nostalgia as an excuse? Old games may not be of your personal preference, yet that doesn't give you the right to say other people have warped feelings about a game just because of nostalgia. My favourite game of all time is Lufia 2. You really think it's nostalgia? Think again, I still play it nowadays and would pick over any game that's released right now. Not everyone functions in the same way as you do.

I can not think of a single reason why.

Games have gotten better since the NES era. I don't get why nostalgia automatically makes something awesome.

 Which game has achieved the greatness of Super Mario Brothers 3? I can't think of any others off hand.

Easy,Super Mario Galaxy(The best mario game) Honestly.This game was groundbreaking. Though for us people who grew up in the 90's really don't see a big deal in how its the best game. I can say its nouthing special.

That is not the point of the question.

I am saying that twenty years ago, if we gave a gamer the choice of two games that came out, SMB3 or SMG, they will go to SMG because it's better in every sense of the word.

And yes, nostalgia does warp feelings. Being young does not contribute well either.

And I don't know what Lufia 2 is.

Super Mario World? Super Mario 64? Super Mario Galaxy?

Do you think, 20 years ago, any gamer in their right mind would choose SMB3 if those three were available back then?

No. SMB3 has been surpassed in quality just like almost every, if not all games from the 2D era.

I doubt you understand the concept of greatness. For example, history judges that the greatest civilization in European history was the Antonine Roman Empire; but all European countries today possess vastly superior military weapons, production techniques, and modes of transportation.

Twenty years from now, do you see Mario Galaxy selling millions of copies and being looked on with the same light as Super Mario Brothers 3?  Will it incorporate itself as strongly into a benchmark position in the history of game releases? As for Super Mario World and Super Mario 64, at the Virtual Console sales data shows Super Mario Brothers 3 outselling both of them combined in total sales; in monthly sales, Super Mario Brothers 3 was just shy of 60,000, Super Mario World at 24K and Mario 64 at 17K.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Serious question:

Why did they take gambling out of all the other Mario games? Gambling for powerups was awesome, and really all SMB3 needs to beat SMBW.

Quality is a matter of opinion. Not everyone thinks like you do.

SMB3 is by far one of the best games of all time, the clever level design, the creative powerups, the music, everything about it is perfect. My friends who are not gamers in any way, shape, or form can pick it up and still have fun. It gets really hard and some levels are almost impossible, but they are just so well designed that you keep playing.
