i prefer the ps3, but you're not credible. i think ps3 is the future, because, as you said the 360 got dvds, which are already pushed to its limits, while ps3 games become better and better. But the 360 has good games too, even if i prefer the ps3 games...

OS can be run without an install from cd. From there you can choose to install to hdd. I use mandriva for everything but gaming which i have a basic xp install for that's crap free.
