Not really, Yoshi's Story used 2d sprites for characters, whereas NSMBW (and the DS version too), uses actal 3d models for them.

Galaxy did have 2D platforming sections, after all. So it wouldn't have made that much of a difference, aside from the whole, quasi-cel-shaded thing that Galaxy had going on.

I like the way it is, but if they were going to do anything different I would have gone more retro - make it with sprites.

I'd have to say LittleBigPlanet is a far prettier game and that is 2D. When I looked at New Super Mario Bros I have to say their isn't much texturing. Everything looks plastic which is Nintendo's main flaw. Just look at other titles like Pokemon, does Pikachu look like a mouse? no hair at all he looks like he's made of plastic.

I'd love to see NewSuperMarioBrosHD looking better then Little Big Planet!

What?  NSMBW blows SMG out of the water graphically.



SMG's environment is a lot more controlled and less filled up.

It's kind of like when they did a game like God of War on the PS2, and the priority was graphics. So everything was very scripted and controlled to have a lot of processing power being used all the time on visuals. SMG also had a high priority on graphics, and was more of a controlled experience as well(not to the same degree as GOW, but I hope that's a good example).

NSMBW puts more emphasis on gameplay. While in SMG the processing power is used more fully to create the visuals, in NSMBW that capability is left for possibility in gameplay. For example, you may be playing single player and not doing everything that can happen on the screen which is a fraction of what the game can do, that wouldn't quite happen so often in SMG so the processing power could be used for visuals. So it's really a matter of priority coupled with the gameplay style. Also I think NSMBW looks fantastic.

You can't really use the SMG engine in NSMBW and expect better results while having the same gameplay style.

Yeah, and make the entire game just be about pressing the A button at the right time and nothing more.  Oh, and make three and a half of those hours cut scenes.  That would be awesome.

And screw the ending in favor of a blatant sequel hook. And skimp on the single player in favor of online multiplayer.



A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs
