Forums - Sales - The difficulty of selling a Wii

I wouldn't pay one red cent for a used Wii if there was a chance I could score one new at a store. Used = sucks. Anyone that is trying to soak someone almost a hundred dollars for something they can buy new for less shouldn't be surprised that they can't sell it. It's not like its Barry Bonds homerun ball. Come on man.

I don't really find a problem with buying and then re-selling.

But cdude1034, if you wait til late November, I have a feeling you'll be able to sell it for a profit.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I know I can then, but I need capital so I can buy more.

Speculation is nothing different from gambling except that the return policies of many retailers allow for a buyout. So last winter there was no risk for speculating on hardware. This year is probably going to be very different. I have already heard of a few retailers altering their return policies. Usually it will be store credit rather then full refund. So you might end up really gambling this winter. I would not count on the system being as exploitable this year. God have mercy on the retailer stupid enough to not adopt such a policy granted what happened with the PS3 market last year.

The Wii is no less a speculation then a particular stock, market, or property. The bottom can fall out. Remember at one time a lot of bad stocks were rated must buy. Many markets collapsed, or bubbles burst. Property values have risen and fallen over the decades. There has never been a sure thing.

Even now every second you hold on to that machine depending on the retailers return policy could be to your own detriment. What happens if they drop the price on their hardware. Will they honor the original price, or the current price. I assume you have read the fine print on their return policy. You are aware of the time frames correct.

Anyway in answer to your question. I have no problem finding Wiis where I live. I see dozens of them all the time. Hell right now I actually think locally we have a glut on our hands. Stacks of Wiis out on display all of the time. Perhaps it is regional. I understand in New Jersey you cannot find them, but I have to wonder if people are actually looking that hard.

So he's helping people get a Wii buy buying one and then selling it for more than it's worth? He is doing nothing to help anyone out other than himself (he even admitted it) so don't try to defend him and say that he has some altruistic motive. If he truly wasn't a dick he would just not buy the Wii and let someone who actually wants the system buy the system for *gasp* the actual price.

No, there's no if, ands, or buts about it, buying a system just to profit off of people is a prime example of complete douchebaggery. Then the fact he comes here whining expecting some kind of sympathy and not expecting to be called a jerk is just amazing.

If someone wants a Wii so bad they are willing to pay x for it, he is not selling it for more than it is worth.  In fact, he would be selling it for x, which would be what it is worth to the person that is buying it.  This is economics 101.  If he is not helping anyone else than no one will help him by buying the the product for x.  He doesn't need to have an alturistic motive.  If both people are happy with the deal than both people are helped.  I work at a store that sells thing, like cakes, for example.  When I hand someone a cake they say thank you and I say thank you.  We both say thank you because we are both happy about the transaction.

And the *actual* price is the price that a willing seller and willing buyer agree on, not the MSRP.  As you know, MSRPs and actual retail sale prices differ from nation to nation and store to store inside nations (and even by store region).  For example, my store sells Halo3 for $49.99 whereas the Best Buy 1/4 mile down the road sells it for $59.99 and the Wal-Mart 1/2 mile more down the road sells it for $59.95.  No one would get ripped off at any of these prices.  If I bought the game at Costco and went door to door, selling the game for $65, I would not be ripping people off, either.

Time and effort are worth something.  A TV Superstore might change 30% more than Costco for a HDTV but that doesn't mean it is ripping people off.  Smart cars that cost $14,000 in parts of Europe might go for over $20,000 in America, but that doesn't mean anyone is getting ripped off.

It sounds like you need to get off your moral values dead horse and on to the economic realities horse.

You "need capital?" Are you taking economics in high school or something? Just get a freaking credit card and buy however much you want, and then sell them before interest accrues.

But my advice aside, you're a dick.

If you need "capital", get a job maybe? Somehow I'm thinking that selling a Wii when it isn't holiday season isn't going to raise much money.

I knew a guy last year that bought 4 PS3's and was trying to sell them on ebay and no one was buying them. He had them up for 1 week bids and no one bought them, even though he placed them up 3 weeks in a row dropping the price each time. He had it down to $100 over retail with free shipping and no one was buying them. This is when the PS3's were sold out all over NA.

I think you will find most people are not willing to pay anything over retail for any console.

Value is a relative aspect. Classical economic theory and marxist adepts thought value was absolute. They thought you could measure the value of goods just by calculating the amount of work (hours) needed to make that good. That is a wrong view. If value was absolute that means that every price should reflect this value. I do not want to go to deep into that aspect, but I think we all agree on the basics.

Nintendo makes Wiis. They cost less than 250 and they sell it for profit. This means they sell it for more than it is worth for them. We buy it for 250 and most people think (at least I do) it is a bargain. Come on, we get a game, online capabilities and 512 mb to save data (we paid the same price for less 5 years ago). Someone that just wants to play a Wii and has no time to camp may find a good idea to pay 300 for it. What I mean is that he can make (just an example) 100 bucks in that 3 hour he would spend on the line. Theorically, it would be a good deal for him paying 251-349 for that Wii. Now lets say some random "Daddy" forgot to buy the Wii for his daughter Xmas present. That would ruin his and her Xmas. He is desperate enough to pay 1000 dollars for one Wii, just to save his daughter from a traumatic childhood experience.

I do not think the OP is a repulsive human being. He is sot of a smart ass (not an insult), but he is not doing something wrong. Gamestop rip us off much more than that and we still do not complain that much.

So I recently posted a Wii on my local Craigslist, but so far all I've gotten was one reply saying "You can find them in the stores for $250" (I'm selling for $330)

Yes, I understand people don't wanna pay above retail, but I can't help but wonder if I would've had this problem if the Wii was still selling as quickly.

Recently I've noticed in my area that stores are getting larger shipments (at least Gamestops are) and are selling out less quickly, and I wonder if that's a nationwide trend, or just certain regions getting a larger supply.

I suppose what I'm asking is if anyone is/was in a similar situation trying to sell a Wii or if you noticed the same things I have, or the opposite.

That's what you get for being a dick and trying to make a profit off people trying to get something for their kids. Try selling your Wii for $250 + shipping and I guarantee you it will sell almost instantly.

meh. i made a resonable amount last christmas doing the same thing with a wii. though in retrospect perhaps keeping it would have been the right decision, as the first generation is the easiest to mod and is still the best Wii model for this from my understanding. Nonetheless, some kids in Alberta had a very merry christmas, even if their dad paid over retail.

Most corporations that we support essentially do their best to nickel and dime you to death. What are these resellers doing that makes them "dicks" compared with most corporations?
