Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo is releasing a new DSi with larger screens for Japan this year

There's a new Nintendo DSi coming. And it's coming this year to Japan, boasting a larger 4" screen and... well, a larger 4" screen, according to a report from the reliable Nikkei news service.

According to that report, which appeared in the Nikkei newspaper and has since made its way online, the price for the new, larger DSi will remain the same, 18900 yen. The large screen DSi, three-quarters of an inch larger than the current model, is said to be aimed at an older market, the type who likes big buttons on their telephones and large print books.

While the jumbo Nintendo DSi is planned to hit Japan this year, says the Nikkei, a release elsewhere is said to be under discussion. Nintendo announced the original DSi in a similar fashion, officially unveiling the device last October then releasing it domestically before the end of the year.

We're checking in with Nintendo of America for comment and will update if they have anything interesting or confirming to say.

Well this will be nice for people with big hands and the larger screens are a plus. Your thoughts.

Hmm.

I wonder how big the device will be? The DSL is already pushing on my pocket size, so I'd probably skip on this if it ever came to the US. Some comparison pics would be nice.

I suspect a lot of them will end in hands of much younger people than they intended ;)

I was thinking the same thing but if it's the same resolution then it might not actually look that good on a 4 inch screen for people with eyes that actually still work.

So... will the system itself remain the same? I mean, is the current DSi big enough to support 4 inch sceens, or will they have to increase its dimensions as well?

I hope this DOSENT come to the west, just to justify my purchase of my DSi

I bought a Lite when the Lite was released and I bought a DSi when DSi got released. But honestly do I need a 4" screen? Is it worth trading in my DSi? will the price difference (After trading in my DSi) be worth it in the end?

I myself am sceptical. to be perfect honest I expect a new handheld in the next few years, so buying yet another DS just seem inpractical. I never picked up a PSPGo why should I pick up a 4" DSi instead? what other features other then a bigger screen make it worth shelling out the dough?

I agree, I don't think that sales to the older generation are going to be bulstered at all. I think the die hard fanboys will buy it up and as the 4' screen becomes default the parents will buy it up for their children. I think what would be cool is if Nintendo donated a ton of DSi's to old folks homes etc...etc... a cheap publicity stunt that could actually lead to higher sales among seniors and older adults!

Nintendo needs to market this new bigger screen to the audience their aiming for. That means taking out adds at old age homes and hospital's. Maybe paying off some glasses outlets to promote the bigger screen to people with eye problems! A vigerous campain alongside the platforms launch could have the impact they are hoping to achieve. But without a vigerous campain I doubt they will see many seniors purchasing it

Strange announcement.

I hope they don't release it in Europe, or else...I'll buy it.
