Ubuntu is crap compared to windows 7.

im guessing you don't know ubuntu.

why is it good?

because its fully costumizable. everything is free and there is everything.

No one asked for your opinion

As solid an operating system as it is, Linux is still not a realistic option for the majority of PC users in the world. Live with it.

And no one asked your opinion either. Linux is a VERY viable option for general PC users. A lot of netbooks come pre-installed with Linux and now Google Android. Even if the PCs are dual-boots Linux + Windows, Linux offers instant booting and internet access which is the main purpose for most PC users to start their PCs.

Your seriously out-of-date with your lack-of-understanding if you think a general user wouldn't understand at least the base features coupled with Linux.

I don't give extra points for it being free. As in free as beer. Of course it is a good thing if you can customize/modify your OS if needed. The funny thing is that I don't need to customize my Windows 7. There is everything? No, that is not true. You can get pretty good FOSS counterparts but they still lack a lot of features which are included in commercial windows applications.

Gimp is good and all, but still it is not photoshop. You can try to install CS3 with wine. You might get it running after a lot of fruitless fiddling and be happy about it but when you notice that all the tools aren't working properly you will cry. Same goes for a lot of software.

How about games? Windows 7 runs all of them! Does ubuntu do that? No. But hey, at least it runs a big percentage of them through wine. Too bad that even if the games run, they suffer from bad framerates and weird glitches. But don't mind that, some games actually run properly on wine!

How about x64 drivers and some basic software? Yeah, you can get them to work. It is very simple! Here is one example how simple it can be using Ubuntu:

sudo killall -9 firefox

sudo wget http://www.boundlesssupremacy.com/Cappy/getlibs/getlibs-all.deb
sudo dpkg -i getlibs-all.deb

sudo apt-get remove -y --purge flashplugin-nonfree gnash gnash-common mozilla-plugin-gnash swfdec-mozilla libflashsupport nspluginwrapper

sudo rm -f /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f ~/.mozilla/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -rfd /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs nspluginwrapper

sudo getlibs -p libcurl3
sudo getlibs -p libnss3-1d
sudo getlibs -p libnspr4-0d

sudo wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz
tar zxvf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz
sudo cp install_flash_player_10_linux/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
rm -rf ~/install_flash_player_10_linux/
sudo nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/

Oh crap, ubuntu is so awesome!

Note:

That is what I really had to do to get flash working on ubuntu, a copy&paste from some old text file. I did not mind that back then but now? No thanks, windows 7 is much better.

there are alot more than GIMP to use on linux...

Frame issues are mostly caused by YOUR computer, not OS. unless its not up-to-date.

Or.. you can just update your flash with the update manager. :-/

Naturally. If you are referring to other graphics apps, can you tell me the one which can even remotely compare to CS4? If you were talking about other programs, it is really hard to find a viable native linux counterpart for too many windows programs.

Framerate issues on linux are due to wine, not the hardware. Native games worked like charm. Also on dualboot those games went like 80fps on windows -> 30fps on linux. And the sad part is that 30fps was not stable. I was using Nvidia card which at the time was supposed to have better drivers on linux than Ati.

Guess what? You should be able to install flash with GUI of apt-get. But when it did not work, that is what I had to do.

Now can you tell me why windows 7 is crap? How long you have been using it? I am willing to guess that you don't have that much experience on linux either. You are one of those... noobs who install "ubuntu" and spout how good it is without actually knowing a lot about it.

Surprising "MS shield protection" from a lot of people indeed.
Personnaly, since I m not at all used at those ads, I will say : very good ads, particularly the first one.

Time to Work !

Windows 7 is awesome.

Mac mavens can say what I want but until Mac can...

1. Allow the customization of a Wintel box...
2. Play ALL the games I want...
3. Have non sluggish mouse reaction...
4. Not be made by Apple* (heh)...

Then Macintosh has nothing for me. I used to use Macs extensively, but now that Windows can run all of the photo, video and sound (NLE) programs I need to work, I have no reason to use a Mac at all. XP was the first strike, 7 is the final blow.

Go Windows! I still want to get back into linux though.

* I dislike IPods, IPhones, Ianything too, so I am not an Apple hypocrite. I refuse to drink the Apple flavored kool-aid.

They are just doing more advertising for Windows 7. >_>

Nintendo still doomed?

At least I'm staying on topic, this is a MS Vs Apple thread. Your post was like bringing up The Conduit in a thread about Halo Vs Killzone.

You're still kidding yourself if you think Linux is a genuine option for regular computer users. Sure if its preloaded on a system thats designed for it like a netbook thats only used for Facebook, but you think a regular PC user is going to be able to troubleshoot Linux easily if something goes wrong? Most users are stupid, many struggle to find the power button. Don't overestimate the stupidity of the masses. Linux is great for some things, but mass market acceptance is not one of them... certainly not yet anyway.

3- Do you mean the mouse acceleration? I agree it's weird to go back and forth from Windows to OS X. I think there's a way to turn it off, but I'm not going to mess with university computers. Then again, the open lab Macs are require university user login just like the PC's now and things are more restricted.
