Forums - Nintendo - Reason Epic Mickey is on the wii, because of the audience

“Well, think about it. Would you really want to tackle convincing Halo or Grand Theft Auto players that they want to be Mickey Mouse? Would you really want to do that? In terms of finding a congenial audience, let’s go for a platform that’s known for Mario and Link and now Sonic. Come on. Honestly, with the unit sales on the hardware, it was kind of a lucky happenstance. We made the call to go to the Wii long before it was clear that the Wii was going to be, at least for now, the best-selling platform."

Thats true... but it also has motion controls which is perfect for this sooo...

...what a stupid quote... all 3 systems have their younger audience games... just because Halo and GTA sells a bunch doesnt mean those are the only games. R&C, LBP, Viva Pinata, ect ect... and why talk about Zelda when talking about target audiences? thats a more mature game. Why didnt he say NMH or Madworld?

The last Viva Piñata bombed quite hard, specially with all the effort that Microsoft put in the franchise (animated series, toys); LBP even with the cutesy sackboy is not designed for younger audiences and R&C didn't fit in that audience.

Not to troll but if this game fails. I am going to laugh hard after reading this

330K? Not a blockbuster, but how much would that game have to cost for that to be a bomb? I'm serious. Being an HD game, that is likely, but it's also likely the didn't spend loads on it that might have been done for a gritty, "realistic" game.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Epic Mickey is actually in kind of in a tough spot I think, because while yes, it is a "Mickey" game, it's not your typical cutesy and kiddy Mickey game that we're used to seeing since the NES days, so it might turn off most of the Wii's casual/family audience, and that would leave most of it's sales to the stalwart but dwindling hardcore Nintendo base that thrives on games of this kind, most similarly Okami (based on what we've seen of the game so far with the whole paintbrush mechanics and whatnot).

Then again, it could have the huge cross-over appeal that a series like Kingdom Hearts has, where it appeals to the younger audience and also to the more hardcore RPG players. Only time will tell, but I can't help but have this sinking feeling that, no matter how great the game is or if it gets a ton of glowing reviews, that it might just not live up to the hype and be unable to muster up the massive sales that a game of this caliber should almost certainly receive.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

this wont end well

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

It's a tough spot to be in. Most likely they want a kingdom hearts reaction in sales, but KH was more for the hardcore audience. The wii is seen as a casual console and its top selling games are minigames/ 1st party games. Similarly, hardcore games on the wii have not drummed up sales.

It may work, but i think the mickey game would have appealed more to the 360/ps3 audience.

Why? Is it because you think that every game on the HD systems will automatically sale? Or are you saying that their is an audience for this type of game on the HD systems? Or are you saying that this type of game is not going to sale on the Wii? Games fail for a number of reasons beyond demographics and platform choices. Just look at some of the games that failed on the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, and the PSP. I'm sure that the developers and publishers thought that they chose the right platform with their target demographic yet the game still failed. Successful games are not easy to predict and this is why more and more publishers stick with sequels to games that have an established fan base. This is very unfortunate and hopefully this attitude will change over time.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba
