Infinity Ward: We Don't Need Next Gen

Dan Howdle 09:56, Friday 23 October 2009

Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling says there's always a way to shatter the glass ceiling...

Speaking exclusively with NowGamer, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling confessed that there's plenty of life left in the current crop of consoles and that the company is in no hurry to leap to a new generation of technology.

"I think you can always take a console further." says Bowling "It’s all about hitting that glass ceiling but then finding ways to break through it. When we finished Call Of Duty 4, when we were done with it, we thought we’d hit that glass ceiling, but then, as you can see with Modern Warfare 2, we've found ways around it. We introduced texture streaming which allows you to do this and that opens up more doors, so we may not know it yet, but there is definitely much more you could do [with the current generation]."

“The biggest thing you struggle with is space”

When asked if reaching that glass ceiling ever leaves the developer yearning for more powerful tech instead of simply finding ways around it, he responds: "No, not yet. I mean, the biggest thing you struggle with is space. Our engineers have been finding new ways around that. If you can beat that, you’re still in good shape."

Whether he is ambiguously referring to disc space, memory and other space constraints, we'll leave for you to ponder. Certainly if it's the former, his statement really only applies to one console platform. Yikes!

I wouldn't mind if this gen went on for MANY MANY more years actually

we'll be 4 years in when the first Gt & FF & Zelda arrive.....this gen should go on for atleast 6 more years

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

nice.... how about dedicated servers?

but seriously, I think one major reason for not wanting a new gen is development costs.
IW are probably fine as they should have made a ton of cash, but they are never sure that their next game will flop and that they won't recup large developpment costs...

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

a long gen would be nice on the pocket book. xD

..and, the wii proves that shiny graphics aren't required to sell games. as much as i think uncharted2 looks amazing, i have a feeling next gen i will have a hard time telling the pretty games from the average games. or even if i can tell the difference, i probably won't care as much.

If the generation goes on for a few more years, maybe we'll actually see Final Fantasy XIII XD

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

Glad he said that.

This gen's HD console hardware is good enough for at least another 5-6 years...at the very least 4yrs anyway.

Spending huge amounts of money developing an engine only to use it a couple times a gen is crazy.

The "struggling with space" comment is VERY interesting though.

^^^^^

I wonder, whose fault is that......Hmmmm.....

Nex gen can't come soon enuff. I dont want the PC to beat console grafix again with a huge margin.

I don't want to see new consoles except from Nintendo. It's weird, EVERYONE says it's going to be such a long gen, but most gamers are very insecure about it which means we're used to being surprised somewhat.

Another 6 years? Impossible. People always say things are "good enough," in the meat of a generation like we're in now, but once they actually are shown what can be done with new technology, they'll be chomping at the bit for more. Developers i think are the same way

At the very latest, Nintendo will move by 2012, and the other two will need new consoles to be able to compete with them (Natal and the PMC aren't going to make them competitive with Nintendo just as add-ons)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I would love to see this gen last like another 8+ years before releasing a new console. There's just so much new features put into this gen compared to all previous gens that i'd like to have alot more time to fully utilize it.
