Forums - Nintendo - In hindsight what could have Nintendo done to stem piracy on Wii?

I think they should have stuck with the GC discs but instead being high capacity to match the capacity of DVDs.

What do you think?

Is piracy really a problem on the Wii?

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

sadly i think it is. I know people who have 100s of wii games all pirated.

Sure, but those are probably a tiny percentage of the entire Wii base

Piracy is a problem on all consoles, especially the mega successful ones, and there's nothing anybody can do about it. The modders and pirates can upgrade their stuff faster than the giant gaming corporations can, because they work in tiny elite ninja hax0rz groups.

yer but look at it from this angle. that tiny percentage is all core gamers as casuals would not even be aware of piracy.

not to mention some of the asian countires who would just sell pirated software and chipped consoles. I bet some of those people wouldnt know the difference between legit and pirated because of how common it is there.

Piracy is relatively uncommon on the PS3 thanks to in large part to Blu Ray.

Ninty has lots of piracy stemming measures, they sealed the chip on the DVD drive that modders solder the mod chip onto for one thing, then the online firmware updates that bricks modded wiis, the firmware updates mandatory for certain games. There probably are modded firmware versions as well to counter these though.

My Wii is modded and has never been bricked by updates.

what could they have possibly done? kill every modder/hacker? all consoles get modded and pirated, that's just how it is (with some exceptions of course)

like the PS3, it still isn't modded, i think it's because if you have enough money to buy one then you got enough money to buy all the games you want (not really the case anymore, lol). it might also be due to bluray, but that format has been cracked for a long time now (poeple can copy PS3 games now but they can't play them, hahah) so i don't know how much that affects the situation.
