Forums - Sales - Wii sells 1 million in 3 weeks!

This holiday is going to be really entertaining to watch, and the weeks that MW2 and NSMBW come out will be great as well.

I hope Sqrl comes back with his yearly H.Y.P.E. thread.

@steroid

thats exactly what he meant.

As far as the market is concerned yes, Carnival games has wider appeal than Metroid prime

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

you didnt say the games had wider appeal, you said "better games".

When someone considers something more appealing, they consider it better, if I find one girl appealing, and another not, which girl do you think I would say is better?

So for the record, you believe that Wii Fit is a better game then SMG, correct?

Not sure what you're suggesting Brent, but I'm certainly not dealing in sentiment either!

I'm sure it was you who pointed out previously how PS3 outsold 360 in Jan - Sep 2008 but 360 came back over the holidays (mainly due to price cut) to outsell PS3 for the whole year. Trends are dynamic and can normally be explained by key influencers.

Wii sales are down this year mainly due to lack of key software.

Jan - Sep 2009 just doesn't compare to 2008. To be getting close to (record breaking) 2008 levels in the last few weeks shows a real resurgence for Wii IMO and with a stronger holiday lineup this year (NSMB Wii primarily - which will easily top 20m worldwide and has a strong "hardcore Nintendo" appeal) should push Wii ahead of last year in November / December worldwide.

To say that Wii has already peaked is a little crazy and definitely seems to be based more on sentiment than hard facts.

I'm not suggesting it is you acting on sentiment Brett, you deal in numbers too.

I just dont think that software is the major driver here.  We do not know for sure that Wii is down due to a lack of key software we just summise this... I would have thought that the new adopters and the mass market casual would see key software as Wii Fit plus and Wii sports resort?  Wii music didnt exactly set the world on fire and I genuinely think that consumer trends have changed.

Wii just isnt the must have gadget it was.  Thats not a criticism... surely it is an undeniable fact.  Wii was almost out of stock all year round, now it is on offer.  I used to hear people who know nothing about gaming and who had never gamed talking about the Wii... they dont talk about it anymore.

Thing is we can be fairly confident that it is a lack of software that kept Wii sales low, most factors between last year and this year haven't changed, just the strength of the software lineup, in addition we know that people buy consoles for games.  People won't talk about a console that has little to offer them, if there aren't games for the Wii that they want why would they talk about it.

Arent you just ignoring the blatantly obvious?

I shall speak for the UK.  There was huge hype and demand in the UK for the Wii, it was as rare as rocking horse shit for months.  You had to pay over the odds through main stream retailers... this was primarily to buy Wii Fit and own Wii Sports.  This casual adoption is what drove the huge numbers.  That hype amongst the casuals no longer exists and wont return with the release of long stading core games.... They dont relate to those games.   Go up to a Wii fit adopter and say "hi... you picking up the new zelda..or NSMB?" be ready for a blank expression.

Apologies for the use of the word casual... I dont like it but its the best way olf describing the group.

Well I guess being sold out due to not enough being on the market when casual adoption drove huge numbers is awesome.

But now that huge fad is over, casuals aren't purchasing the Wii at all, in fact, sales have dropped A TON lately. nearly 10% from it's record breaking 2009 holiday season!. Yup, now that Wii is 10% lower it is no longer the gadget to have. I mean sure, when it sold 400k last year it was absolutely amazing, everyone wanted one!. 364k this year? nah,, not impressive at all, people are abandoning the Wii.
