No, i'm pretty sure emulators are legal. I mean WINE is legal afterall.

WINE Is Not an Emulator, etc.

@OkeyDokey:

I agree there's nothing wrong with using emulators for shit Nintendo no longer sells, morally speaking, but I like playing games on ma TV.

Emulators are legal but downloading games (roms) for them isn't.

Khuutra, you could hook your computer up to your TV and play on an emulator :P

Alright, a game console is almost certainly a utility patent (we care about the function, not the looks), so its patent in the United States would last twenty years.

I believe the SNES was released in this country in 1991, so no legal machine can be manufactured for another two years. But the NES does fall outside that timeframe, so Twesterm's console is probably legit, assuming they didn't run afoul of other, newer patents.

The reason other companies can now make duplicate NES hardware is because the copyright registrations expired a year or two ago, the SNES hasn't. Emulation isn't a bad way to go for SNES, considering the extreme cost of many SNES games these days.

Speaking hypothetically, one may purchase a used XBox at a very reasonable price, and pay certain parties to modify said XBox to include additional functionality not normally found in said console. These functionalities may include the ability to play games from other consoles on one's television screen.

The best thing I can think of for playing snes games on a tv would be....well an snes >.

There is a wrinkle in the law! The twenty year patent term applies only to patents issued after June of 1995. Patents filed before that date were issued for only 17 years. You may still have a chance!

Assuming anyone's taken advantage of this gap, that is.
