And?
The first 360 games that came out were PS2 games in HD, and now look where we are.
Just wait till Crytek or someone puts something out something good using DX11.

From what I've seen/heard it improves gaming slightly.
But overall the system performance is way ahead of Vista. It's a no brainer to go with Windows 7, especially with the upgrade was $50 not too long ago.
It's just that simple.

It will probably be amazing... but... most people won't have GPU's that can use DX11 and if you do you will need a super-computer like when Crysis first came out.
Well, Crytek themselves said they could have optimized Crysis a lot more, but it was rushed out the door... I doubt they'll make the same mistake again, hopefully.

I didn't participate in the beta for Windows 7, but by all reports, it is leaps and bound above Vista, so I'm probably going to switch as soon as possible, but I'm wondering how much pain will be associated with incompatible drivers? http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/sns-200910201352mctnewsservbc-vid-wellplayed-mct5o,0,3894392.story http://www.pcworld.com/article/174017/the_sorry_state_of_windows_7_gaming.html/ Based on these articles, it doesn't look like there's much benefit for gaming...other than the headaches Vista provided...Doy you want to do this? No...seriously...do you REALLY want to do this? Are you sure you want to do this? |
lol, the OS uses less memory and system resources, and they will only get better.
Does everyone need this? Well, if they have XP, they will soon. You will pretty much need this or Vista to have the best looking games, and the most system rich rig. Windows 7 is the best OS on the market starting tomorrow. Period.
As far as gaming, it's already better than Vista, and when games start taking advantage of the new DX and software, like when SP1 hits, I mean, this OS is already a fantastic piece of software out of the box. It'll only get better.
So yea, high end, serious PC gamers need Windows 7, or at the very least Vista. They always have. You've might just never realized it, because you probably aren't one. Casual users won't have the rigs necessary to utilize it, so Umbunto is fine, or whatever.
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
NO NO, NO NO NO.

That is amazing for being rushed out the door. They are by far the best game graphics designers. I hope most developers decide to use the new Crytek Engine that is coming to consoles instead of the Unreal Engine.

Crytek charges too much to use their engine. Until they lower their charges, Unreal will still be used...

And they all came out in the last month. EDIT: How much better is Windows 7 compared to Vista? Is it worth getting tomorrow or something that isn't a big deal and can wait? |
Yea, it will take time for some time for more GPU's to come out and for more games to start using DX11.
As of right now, I believe Windows 7 performs similarly to the currently updated Windows Vista. Some games run a little better and some worse than Vista. It's obviously really early and we'll see what happens as Microsoft updates Windows 7 and hardware manufactures work on their driver support.

Windows 7 vs Vista
http://www.guru3d.com/article/windows-7-vs-vista-vga-game-performance/
"Windows 7 is a very promising platform for many reasons. For me personally, Windows 7 is what Vista was supposed to be really. With our pretty spiffy test platform we can tell you that it's a pleasure of an operating system to work with. It's fast, good looking, diverse and most of all... very stable on all levels. Neither with the NVIDIA or ATI graphics cards did we run into any issues, and that is quite remarkable considering we are at the threshold of a new operating system era.
The VGA drivers are not only stable, they work really well and perform good as well. I was afraid that with the coming of a new OS we'd see a performance drop just like we had with the transition from Windows XP to Vista, but if anything, Windows 7 VGA performance is as good as Windows Vista with the obviously occasional random fluctuation in performance here and there though. Looking at the opposite side, Windows 7 won't offer performance increases in graphics performance either with an exception here and there. Windows 7 will obviously bring a lot of good stuff along with it in the near future... though it will be available for Vista as well, DirectX 11 is just around the corner. Better shaders, better shader performance, a new compute shader and hardware tessellation are just some of the few new but exciting items that DX11 will bring. Of course this website can't wait until some actual DirectX 11 class graphics cards are released ... and along with it software applications and games. So if you are a little afraid of picking up Windows 7 due to driver issues... don't be. It's stable and working really really nicely. Two big thumbs up to both ATI, NVIDIA and sure .. Microsoft. And as a testament to that, let me assure you, we'll be switching all our test systems towards a Windows 7 based platform... real soon."

I did the student deal and pre-ordered Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $30. Since it's just the upgrade version (32-bit OR 64-bit as opposed to having both in the full retail version), I decided it would be best to go for the 64-bit version even if my lowly e2160 that's overclocked and measly 2gigs of ram wouldn't make that much use of it.
I think what I'll try to do is continue to hold onto XP and dual boot if needed.
I just read those two articles, both of them roast the shit out of PC gaming, say MS is letting it die, and admit that Windows 7 is a significant step up in 2 areas of PC gaming, it's also faster, and is not a step backwards in any way. Performance and Games explorer are the two areas.
Also, the reviews of Win7 linked in those stories are fantastic.
Those two articles are complaining about MS not pushing Win7 as a gaming platform.
They aren't complaining about actual performance at all.
You shouldn't post articles out of context like that. It's misleading. Did you just read the article buzzworthy titles and comment on them, or did you mislead us on purpose?
