Forums - General - Are priests obligated to turn you in if you confess a crime in confession?

interesting.

In the US, we have separation of church and state. A religious leader from any church should have no more, or less rights as any person. As a citizen, if someone told me they had committed murder, it' a crime for me not to report it.

I would think it would be a crime for any religious leader to do the same, under the same laws.

If there is no legal document you sign from the government saying "I am now a certified Priest", then how can they have more legal authority then me?

In catholic church they cant turn you in from what you have confessed. In South America there were some priests that turned in people that were socialists to the dictatorships in the 70s and these people got tortured/killed/or sent to exile. These priests will be remembered as traitors because they made a promise of not confessing whatever you say to them.

Mafoo, I think there is a legal document saying that you're a priest. Though I'm not sure.

But there are other forms of privilege too, like attorney client privilege, doctor-patient privilege, spousal privilege and a couple others.
