Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft needs to do something else than price cuts..

This has nothing to do with xbox at all, its a guy parodying as Steve Jobs talking about MS lol, but the history stuff is accurate, and its funny.

Theres a commenter there saying MS lost 10 Billion on xbox so far (thats $10,000,000,000.00), they may just want to recoup that? Not convinced they will do a price drop especially in NA since its MS home turf where they have dominance (over Sony) already.

On the Xbox? I don't think the Xbox is relevant anymore. Anyway, MS really cares about one thing, subduing Sony. I guess thats what Sony gets for trying to take over MS's Market share. This means that even if the 360 loses money, MS will be happy as long as it sells more than Sony.

Past Avatar picture!!!

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

Where do people get this idea that MS are dropping prices so much?

At this point in time in last gen the PS2 and Xbox had gone from a $299 launch price to only $149, while in this gen the Arcade is still $199 (and €179 in Europe). And the HDD equipped unit is even pricier - at launch it cost $399, and today you still have to pay $299 (€239 in Europe) for the high-end SKU.

So the OP has it back-ways. Because actually MS should drop it's price more. The Elite 120GB with DVD instead of Blu-ray shouldn't cost the same as a PS3 120GB with Blu-ray.

The problem in this gen for MS is that they're unable to make savings on their console and thus unable to drop the price as much as is necessary.

The elite 360 is cheaper (€249) in Europe than the PS3 slim (€299). So there is a difference, but Blu-ray drives aren't that expensive anymore.

Microdoft needs more 1st party games like Sony and Nintendo.

360 JAPAN really needs its regular fix of JRPG's to stay afloat.. i still think the 360 should sell arnd 2.2m before its demise... sure thats pathetic compared to wii and even the ps3.. but when we compare it to the XBOX which sold a paltry 0.45m in japan.. the achievement is noteworthy.

Its all about growth. Windows 7/office 2010 should keep funding the MS bandwagon for a few yrs... I wouldnt leave the market at all..

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

From a strategy perspective, M$ will stay engaged with Japan to ensure they force Sony to protect it's home turf, but ultimately, I don't see the Xbox family ever making any headway...Japanese consumer are simply going to be very resistant to buying foriegn products. Look at the Ipod...zero penetration...it's crazy when you go to Japan...I walk into electronic stores and it's all stuff I've NEVER seen before, unlike when you go to Singapore, for example. Maybe Natal will provide greater penetration into that market, but ultimately, I don't see Xbox ever gaining much more than 10-15% market share in any given generation.

I dunno, $ony has a strong hold there, no doubt. But MS may be looking at the future, and not the now, thats what they did with the origional Xbox, and look how that panned out. Just think of the potential if MS could effectively tap into that market.

Maybe...this generation wasn't all bad in Japan...M$ just needs to get more dedicated 1st party development for Japanese oreiented software, if they want to makea stronger impact...and not the timed exclusive thing.  In the coming years, M$ needs to bundle EVERY 360 with a JRPG or Popular action game in Japan.

Ipod has zero penetration in Japan? Up until recently it was the market leader in the mp3 marker there. And its still in second I believe. (please feel free to contradict me if I'm wrong though)

The Japanese do buy foreign products. Its more a question of getting them to buy more foreign products in the gaming industry. Because other entertainment industries aren't affected by this so called nationalism. The japanese are perfectly happy with watching an American movie or buying a British album, why aren't they happy with games?

Thats the interesting question really.

LOL...oops, typing too fast...I meant that Sony has Zero penetration in the player market (outside of Japan)...but it's beating Ipod in Japan. These MP3 players mostly gather dust in elsewhere, but not in Japan, so that's why I said 10-15% for the Xbox family.  I'm not saying that Japanese consumers totally don't buy foreign goods, they just don't on a large scale.

Everyone needs to play Lost Odyssey! Any opposition to this and I will have to just say, "If it's a fight you want, you got it!"
