how about make a handheld console there?
or, not focus so much on FPS?
or, just not carry a company name that is so hated in most part of the world?

I think Japan is important for MS if they want to get continued support from the Japanese third party developers. These games may not sell millions but they add a lot of value to the overall software library.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.
Japan, although smaller than other regions in potential install base, is still an invaluable market. They're just doing...something wrong. Something that causes people to not see passed the brand name.
Microsoft should have never put so much effort into Japan to begin with. As a home console market, its dwindling anyway. They should redouble their efforts in Europe and America. Japan was nothing more than a pipe dream anyways.
Atleast in Europe and America they have made significant headway. The more they continue to work things out there the better. With Natal and a few select titles Europe can easily head back over toward M$'s camp.

MS does not have a handheld console. How many home consoles have been sold in Japan this gen? 13 million or something. 1 million consoles for MS.
That is a small market for them and they should not bother with it.
Has anyone considered that the Japanese might not like that bulky Xbox controller?

Don't the Japanese favour hardware reliability and national pride quite a lot? With them being a foreign console vs 2 home consoles and the least reliable of the 3 Microsoft are pretty screwed this gen. In fact, they screwed themselves somewhat last gen too with the PSUs that set alight. If MS want Japan next gen they need more reliable hardware.
The absolute ONLY way MS will ever get Japan to favor them is to buy DQ and FF lol

how many Starbucks did I see in Japan again? How many people had iPods?
Products like the original Xbox that really scream America F*** Yeah (let's be honest here) with a game lineup that does the same really rubbed them the wrong way. It was too difficult re-change their views. For quite a while in Japan - a few months Nintendo is in and a few months PlayStation is in. It will probably continue that cycle for a while. Right now, both are having adequate representation.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
