My PS3 broke twice so far.. both times it was out of warranty and both times did Sony repair it for free while being very polite on the phone (heard from some they were not.) It takes about 3 weeks till it gets back both times (actually only 13 days this time and like 19 first time)

The only thing wich is shit is that my PS3 broke again after having it back from YLOD repairs for 2.5 week.. O.o its blu-ray drive broke.

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

Actually MS charges $100 for DVD drive fix. Only RROD and "E74" are covered so Garnett is pretty much trollin'.

Thats when you pull out the towel and make it RROD.  So you get it repaired for free even if it normally would have cost you.

I honestly think a lot of people do this ( a lot ).  Adding to the RROD failure rate.    How did this thread devalue into RROD issues?  Sheeshhh.

On topic:

I would be weary of buying a Blu-Ray drive off of ebay.  You may end up with the same problem a few months down the line again.  It would probably be worth the extra money to get a new drive or just pay the extra and get a slim.  And sell your old PS3 on ebay for parts.  You shouldn't lose too much like that.

MY PS3 got ylod and I found some dude on Craigslist who's ps3 wasn't reading disks and bought it for $75.

Paid some dude in Chinatown to swap the mobo's for $30 and paid me $50 bucks for the extra PS3.

So I saved $95 bucks by not sending to Sony for repairs or $250 on not buying a new one.

If your drive still works after you run a cleaning disc, I would take a  look at this site.

http://www.ps3news.com/forums/ps3-guides-tutorials/how-replace-playstation-3-blu-ray-drive-laser-lens-100237.html

He shows how to open up your drive and replace the lense. Maybe you can just open it up and clean the lense? Worth a shot if you were gonna replace your drive anyway.

regarding cleaning disc: its one with brushes, but its specially designed for bluray drives -> brushes have a different length than normal dvd cleaning drives... so should be ok

regarding warranty: as it seems im only 10 months out of warranty, i thought i own my ps3 already one year longer, but that isnt possible as my version came out late 2007. Thx for the heads up.

@Mikeanheath: thats what i will do next! Thx. just have to buy a lens cleaning fluid.

Which cleaning disc is it,  when I called Sony Support about cleaning my PS3 blu-ray drive they said using a cleaning disc that has brushed will void the warranty, not really a problem for you since you dont have one.   But, The reason was because on a blu-ray drive the lens is closer to the disc then a standard DVD drive.   So the brushes can knock it out of alignment.  Thats why they have brushless cleaning discs now.  Which specifically say for the PS3
