Forums - Gaming - PS3 for BR already obsolete?

Couldn't we just use 2 BD's like the 360 uses 1-4 dvds?

@gamelover

it isnt the best blu ray player any more. (its the best for its price... yes)

;). find one that can do the same 299. full HD upscaling, playtv, and vidzone and play HD games and come back, and so be able to update easily for 299-350 with 120gb - 250gb

so.... you just completely ignores the last part in brackets then...

Kowenicki is saying the it is a great player for the price, but he is also saying there are better players if you are willing to pay a high price.

It's like saying you wont buy a Sundial in the 18th century because someday the digital clock might come out!

You know I'm thinking Blu-ray might be the physical format of choice for quite some time. Think about it. Some companies were working on 400-500 GB discs at the conception of the technology, with Sony saying the PS3 could support them through a firmware update. That's as much as high capacity laptop hard drive as of now. My PS3 currently has a 500 GB HD, I couldn't even imagine having that much space on a single disc.

But, my point is that I don't think in the future we're going to need a new disc format as Blu-ray can more than meet the need. And I'm not sure how much info a higher resolution of video will need, but since Blu-ray movies sometime don't use up all the space on a 25 GB disc, I think Blu-ray will be able to fit it. Actually, I'm not even sure we need to go to a higher resolution. I think anything higher would either not be as much of a difference, unless you had a 2000" TV, or it might make your eyes bleed.

Sigh. Already confirmed that 8 layer discs work on PS3, and they stated 16 layers can be supported through a firmware upgrade, and maybe even 32 layers.

the Blu-ray drive in the PS3 is far superior to those buyable for 119$.. also the PS3 blu ray drive CAN be updated trough PS3 firmware wich pretty much makes PS3 THE best blu ray playing device available

I would love to agree with you, and also you are somewhat correct but you are actually wrong. So is this thread but yeah.

The BD player in the PS3 is a 2x drive. The lowest a BD drive can be, and be sold, is a 2x drive.

HD content is 72 Mbps(megabits per second).

1x blu-ray = 36 Mbps.

It is actually illegal to sell a 1x drive, it can't actually stream 1080 content.

You won't probably get a 4x drive in a 120$ player, but it will be a 2x drive, same speed as the PS3, no matter the cost.

Also to translate, 36 Mbps = 4.5 MBps.(8 megabits = 1 megabyte, DVD is 1.4 MBps, or about 11 Megabits per second) Blu-ray is a little over 3x the reading speed of DVD.

Very silly and pointless thread...... * sigh*

@OP

The Movies will not come out on Bigger than 50GB discs. The reason is simple, it is because people buy those movies to play on TVs. The best TVs currently available will play at best with a quality of 1080p. A Movie at 1080p + All special features fit on less than a 50gb disc. If ever the movie was so bloody long, they'd just put it on 2 blu-ray discs. One disc for the movie and the other with the special features.

The technology this article is referring to does not date from yesterday... not a week ago... nor a month... Not even a year... but from the early release of BR to the market. Even then, there were talks of the possibility of 400GB discs which were already in prototype stages.

Your logic for not buying a blu-ray player is flawed at its core. I have a friend who doesn't like Blu-ray because he doesn't like the colour blue. That is a valid reason as it is a matter of personal preference. Others dislike the Wii because they do not like nintendo and that is still a valid reason.

But saying, you won't buy a PS3 because movies will stop playing on it in the future is like saying I won't buy a P4 PC in 2000 because in 2009, the i7 core will come out and Empire total war won't play on the P4. It's like saying that you won't buy a CD player in 1995 because the DVD player will come out in 2001. It is like saying that You won't buy you won't buy blu-ray in 2008 because in 2018, bigger capacities BR player will allow us to watch movies on holographic screens and previous players won't read such discs.

Moreover, I feel reading your post that you are either not very intelligent or smart enough to try to disguise you rant/flame towards the PS3. Regardless, the validity of your argument is put in question when you say you might have considered buying a PS3 for a blu-ray player when it's $150. I don't know anyone in their right mind who waited to buy a PS2 for playing DVDs now that the PS2 is $99. You will wait until 2012 to get the PS3 at $150.

My concern about the current drive in the PS3 playing the larger formats was answered by those posting about the firmware updates confirmed to enable this.  That's good.  I don't like buying something when it's possible to have an upgraded version in the future (i.e. 360's HD DVD external player).  Wonder how many of those sold.  I did put off buying a car for 2 years because a new model with the features I wanted was being announced.  I waited.  LCD TV, I waited.  A new computer I've waited before because of a new tech that would be added to a product line in the future.  So I waited.  This is no different if there is a true concern about the future of BR discs and the current drive being installed in the current units.  Firmware is a good answer and because it's possible then that's good.  If developers kept the same BR disc size and released a larger game on 2 BR discs, then that would be fine.  But to imagine that a developers would release PS3 gamea that used a high capacity disc that was not compatible with an early PS3 model and you need to buy an extra external drive to play newer games?  That would not be cool.  Say what you like but I find it to be a legitimate concern wtih how fast technology advances these days.  With lower priced BR players, I don't understand how Sony could still be losing so much money on each unit sold.  Unless it's not about the BR disc drive any longer but the other tech stuff in the case.

And to say pirate on my gaming library is just funny.  Large family and lot's of in-laws.  I just put up a lot of games on my Amazon wish list and for each birthday, father's day, christmas, or whatever, all I get are games.  I don't get ties or socks and I don't get tools.  I get games.  I like holidays.  If you are paying for all your games yourself, then power to you.  I've bought probably 7-10 games out of all my Wii games myself.  If you think these same people are cheap and should be buying me a PS3 then PM me and I'll let you talk to one of them yourself.  Hope you can convince them before Xmas this year.

And I never said I was considering buying a PS3 for just a blu-ray player.  I never said I won't buy a PS3 because movies will stop playing on it in the future.  Where in the OP did I make those statements?  I don't care about movies on a gaming device which is a fully supported opinion by past posts on this site when home brewers talk about being able to use their Wii for watching DVD movies.  I just stated that it's not a good excuse to buy a PS3 for movies only anymore considering there are lower priced players on the market now.  But I realize that those don't play games.   But it wasn't long ago that fans were saying it was a good purchase just to watch movies only.

Thanks to those who did have answers on the issue for me.  It was helpful.  That's what I like about this site the most.  Knowledge of other gamers.  Fanboys not much help but funny posts to enjoy anyway.

Im pretty sure i read numerous articles of big companies able to make from 100 to 400gb Blu-ray discs and the technology theyll use will make these high-capacity BD work on every current BD player/PS3.

You really need 100-200GB for a movie?

This. What the fudge, 200 GB, what kind of a movie would that be? o_O

Un-Compressed :p

Lol. :p

Well, if they'd ever make 200 GB movies I wouldn't buy them. I'd be terrified I'd scratch the disc and lose a fortune. :p

lol well think about it. Practically a whole harddrive. I've only had one broken blu ray disc so far btw :p dunno how it happened though.. Was heavenly sword :(
