I would love to agree with you, and also you are somewhat correct but you are actually wrong. So is this thread but yeah.
The BD player in the PS3 is a 2x drive. The lowest a BD drive can be, and be sold, is a 2x drive.
HD content is 72 Mbps(megabits per second).
1x blu-ray = 36 Mbps.
It is actually illegal to sell a 1x drive, it can't actually stream 1080 content.
You won't probably get a 4x drive in a 120$ player, but it will be a 2x drive, same speed as the PS3, no matter the cost.
Also to translate, 36 Mbps = 4.5 MBps.(8 megabits = 1 megabyte, DVD is 1.4 MBps, or about 11 Megabits per second) Blu-ray is a little over 3x the reading speed of DVD.
