PS3 for BR already obsolete?

The technology this article is referring to does not date from yesterday... not a week ago... nor a month... Not even a year... but from the early release of BR to the market. Even then, there were talks of the possibility of 400GB discs which were already in prototype stages. 

Your logic for not buying a blu-ray player is flawed at its core. I have a friend who doesn't like Blu-ray because he doesn't like the colour blue. That is a valid reason as it is a matter of personal preference. Others dislike the Wii because they do not like nintendo and that is still a valid reason.

But saying, you won't buy a PS3 because movies will stop playing on it in the future is like saying I won't buy a P4 PC in 2000 because in 2009, the i7 core will come out and Empire total war won't play on the P4. It's like saying that you won't buy a CD player in 1995 because the DVD player will come out in 2001. It is like saying that You won't buy you won't buy blu-ray in 2008 because in 2018, bigger capacities BR player will allow us to watch movies on holographic screens and previous players won't read such discs.

Moreover, I feel reading your post that you are either not very intelligent or smart enough to try to disguise you rant/flame towards the PS3. Regardless, the validity of your argument is put in question when you say you might have considered buying a PS3 for a blu-ray player when it's $150. I don't know anyone in their right mind who waited to buy a PS2 for playing DVDs now that the PS2 is $99. You will wait until 2012 to get the PS3 at $150.

My concern about the current drive in the PS3 playing the larger formats was answered by those posting about the firmware updates confirmed to enable this.  That's good.  I don't like buying something when it's possible to have an upgraded version in the future (i.e. 360's HD DVD external player).  Wonder how many of those sold.  I did put off buying a car for 2 years because a new model with the features I wanted was being announced.  I waited.  LCD TV, I waited.  A new computer I've waited before because of a new tech that would be added to a product line in the future.  So I waited.  This is no different if there is a true concern about the future of BR discs and the current drive being installed in the current units.  Firmware is a good answer and because it's possible then that's good.  If developers kept the same BR disc size and released a larger game on 2 BR discs, then that would be fine.  But to imagine that a developers would release PS3 gamea that used a high capacity disc that was not compatible with an early PS3 model and you need to buy an extra external drive to play newer games?  That would not be cool.  Say what you like but I find it to be a legitimate concern wtih how fast technology advances these days.  With lower priced BR players, I don't understand how Sony could still be losing so much money on each unit sold.  Unless it's not about the BR disc drive any longer but the other tech stuff in the case.

And to say pirate on my gaming library is just funny.  Large family and lot's of in-laws.  I just put up a lot of games on my Amazon wish list and for each birthday, father's day, christmas, or whatever, all I get are games.  I don't get ties or socks and I don't get tools.  I get games.  I like holidays.  If you are paying for all your games yourself, then power to you.  I've bought probably 7-10 games out of all my Wii games myself.  If you think these same people are cheap and should be buying me a PS3 then PM me and I'll let you talk to one of them yourself.  Hope you can convince them before Xmas this year.

And I never said I was considering buying a PS3 for just a blu-ray player.  I never said I won't buy a PS3 because movies will stop playing on it in the future.  Where in the OP did I make those statements?  I don't care about movies on a gaming device which is a fully supported opinion by past posts on this site when home brewers talk about being able to use their Wii for watching DVD movies.  I just stated that it's not a good excuse to buy a PS3 for movies only anymore considering there are lower priced players on the market now.  But I realize that those don't play games.   But it wasn't long ago that fans were saying it was a good purchase just to watch movies only.

Thanks to those who did have answers on the issue for me.  It was helpful.  That's what I like about this site the most.  Knowledge of other gamers.  Fanboys not much help but funny posts to enjoy anyway.
