Forums - Sales - Fun Fact: Game sales Wii vs. PS3

@Everyone:

Why do you derail my thread talking about such unimportant aspects like game quality? I dont want opinionated posts arguing about a subjective thing like game quality, but posts talking about the fact, which is that Wii has more than 600 games versus PS3 with less than 400.

Because quality is still very important to healthy console. If you don't have quality titles, then what's the point of the console. People will only play a few games, then get bored realising they're crap. It then develops into consumers not knowing what to buy and getting disheartened with all the shovelware. It lead to the last big gaming crash that Nintendo helped pull us out of in the late 80s.

Its not the huge number of games that define the Wii, but a few select titles that sell huge numbers (Mario titles, Wii-Fit, Wii Sports resort). If you want to talk about quantity, then sales should be what you're looking at (and probably in light of userbase), not number of games (and guess what, Wii still wins... I think). Even then its not perfect, but its better than going by the number of games.

Using that logic, everyone should be playing on a PC as it has the most titles, the highest percentage of highly rated titles, etc. Or still buying a PS2 in preference to the Wii for similar reasons.

Volume of titles, IMHO, has little to do with console sales, although a lack of titles in certain genres I would accept can be limiting.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I don't have the numbers, but it could be interesting to compare those number of game available on the Wii to those on PS2 and PS1.

Can you tell us how you got these number Faxanadu ?

Did I want to derive a recommendation on what people should play from this?

No I did not.

There is over 3,000 games in the vgchartz database for PS2.

Since the data on older gens is quite incomplete, I assume all of them sold at least some copies.

Uh, did a bit of research :

Wii : 1053 : http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&keyword=&console=Wii&region=All&developer=&publisher=&genre=&boxart=Both&results=200&order=Hits

PS3 : 590 : http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&keyword=&console=PS3&region=All&developer=&publisher=&genre=&boxart=Both&results=200&order=Hits

360 : 743 : http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&keyword=&console=X360&region=All&developer=&publisher=&genre=&boxart=Both&results=200&order=Hits

PS2 : 3084 : http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&keyword=&console=PS2&region=All&developer=&publisher=&genre=&boxart=Both&results=200&order=Hits

PS1 : 1988 : http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&keyword=&console=PS&region=All&developer=&publisher=&genre=&boxart=Both&results=200&order=Hits

PSP : 1043 : http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&keyword=&console=PS&region=All&developer=&publisher=&genre=&boxart=Both&results=200&order=Hits

DS : 2395 : http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&keyword=&console=DS&region=All&developer=&publisher=&genre=&boxart=Both&results=200&order=Hits

Not taken into account coz it's boring : DsiW, WW, XBLA & PSN

@Killy: Great contribution. Now why do you think I added "that sold copies to consumers"?

Hint: It has to do with the "Sales" column in your links.

Actually Kill, I totally take it back. Here comes my analysis sponsored by Killy:

Percentage of total games in game database per console:
Wii - 44.1%
X360 - 31.1%
PS3 - 24.7%

Percentage of overall console sales:
Wii - 48.4%
X360 - 29.1%
PS3 - 22.5%

Q.E.D.

This proves causality.

According to vgchartz, the Wii has over 600 games that already sold copies to consumers, whereas the PS3 has less than 400 (about 360).

To me, this explains Wii dominance.

Does it count if 99% of the Wii library is shovelware shit? The reason for Wii dominance is that everyone was amazed by the motion (gimicky) controlls at first (me included). Later most people realize, that the game offering and value / cost just ins't worth it. Unless they have no other console to play with, they usualy move on.

It doesn't explain why the Wii keeps dominating hardware and software sales after years...

reading the topic i was thinking Faxanadu was somehow praising the wii (the opposite is more frequent)... i was worried. With the last post it all came clear...
