Forums - Gaming - What is the appeal behind JRPGs

I love the way that all of the aspects of a JRPG come together. The stat building, the cinematic battles, the great music, the varied movies (magic, techniques, etc.), the characters, and all the other aspects just seem to fit together perfectly. WRPGs are great too, but let's cut the bullshit and just admit that neither game is really roleplaying.

You're not an Imperial warrior.

You're not Commander Shepard.

And you're most certainly not a Level 60 Druid.

So yeah, stop pretending that roleplaying is so important to you. Most people play RPGs (of either kind) for the entertaining gameplay, stat building, the need for perfection (collecting every last treasure, beating every last side-quest), and the great atmosphere. This is found in both WRPGs and JRPGs, so I don't have a huge preference either way. Both are fun as hell. Some people need to stop being so biased and realizing that it's possible to enjoy more than one side of things.

I agree with this thread. I just dont understand how people can like this genre.

My understanding of JRPGs is that they are:

- linear

- have arena fights

- have Manga people and children, which I find no attraction in

- their settings, worlds and chracters feel very artificial and cheezy

- their stories are childish and overly melodramatic

JRPGs have you beaten this generation or any generation?

None.

Well then you don't know jack shit about them so maybe you shouldn't even comment when this thread is clearly made to answer those who have actyally played them.

But I don't have to finish a game to give a qualified opinion. Plus I can watch the endings on GameAnyone.

Yes you do. I can not watch a game and know how the quality of it. That might be the most heinous thing I've heard you say. You can not give a qualified opinion on the title until you get a long length of time to sit down and play it.

So if you sit at a friends house and watch him play through a game you can't decide how good it is and wether you like it or not?

No, because watching something is very different from playing it.

Love for FPS is more shittier IMO... ROFL

Slimebeast, you don't know anything about JRPGs and have never given them a fair chance. Just stop now.

I LOVE JRPG's.......but a while back I've thought do I really?

I mean the ones I've really only played a lot are Pokemon & Final Fantasy

But I will say this much, WHATEVER genre Final Fantasy is from, it has given me some of the best moments in gaming personally!

RPG = Role Playing Game

Final Fantasy has always made me feel connected to its world & characters.....so making me feel that I play a role, but so has MGS4.

so dunno why we call them RPG's....but who cares, you said why do I play JRPG's?

Well because imo they have engaging stories, the best music out there, great characters, art style & fun gameplay.

Here is a sneak peak at the culmination of all JRPG greatness {puts flame shield on}

_______________

On the other hand, I LOVE WRPG's too......the way you can change the world & make choices was introduced to me through KOTOR 1, which was amazing at the time, but you know what I never felt a link to the characters in WRPG's ever.

Oblivion is a game I've played for longer than any JRPG (in terms of gameplay hours), but as far as story, gameplay & characters go, I didn't really care about em!

Yeah, The Interview with a Vampire is a masterpiece and one of the best vampire stories, on par with Bram Stocker's Dracula.
But you didn't like the continuation of the saga? I concede that the last books have been a bit of a let down, but Memnock the Devil and Tales of the Body Thief were superb as well.

Yes I'd have to say the Body theif was second best but I didn't read Memnock or any after that.

I thought the Vampire Lestat was unbelivably bad and the Queen of the Damned was by far the worst.

I read somwhere that Rice wrote Interview shortly after she had lost a child and poured a lot of emotion into the characters as a way to deal with her Grief. That's probobly why the story is so believable. Definately my favorite book. It wasn't untill many years later that she wrote the sequal and was in a different state of mind so she decided to make Lestat the protagonist. I fount them to be too fantastical and over-indugant.

You should give Merrick, Blood and Gold, Blackwood Farm and Blood Canticle a go. They are the last four of the whole saga, and they are a continous story ;).

Yeah, she wrote that because her young son at that time died, I can't remember of what exactly, but that drove her to write Interview and publish it in 1976. The sequel only came out in 1985, almost 10 years later.
