Forums - Sony - PS3 HDMI Questions

Hey,

I am using a HDMI to DVI cable to connect my PS3 to my HDTV.  The PS3 picks it up but when I go to confirm it reverts back to 480p.  Does anyone know why this is?  This TV does not have a HDMI port just DVI but it is compatable up to 1080i so my goal is to run the PS3 is 720p.

Any assistance would be great.

Hmm I'm also using HDMI to DVI on my 24" LCD monitor and everything works fine.
Although I'm using 1080p, but it shouldn't be a problem to set it on 720p.

What kind of tv is it?

It has 720p but no HDMI, is it a projection?

HAve you tried setting it to 1080i?

Yeah I remember that some of the older HDTVs cannot display 720p...

"Picks it up" as in letting your PS3 determine the modes supported by the TV?
Maybe this kind of information can't be sent back from the TV through the HDMI-to-DVI cable, so you should set the supported modes manually.

you have to hold the power button..

In your PS3 select
Settings > Display Settings > Video Output Settings

Select the HDMI option, select the Custom option, you're brought to next step where you're shown the video modes.

You can test the selected mode from the list by pressing the square button, if it only shows a black screen after 30 seconds of test you'll be brought back to the safe lower resolution mode. Enable the modes that work, then go to next step and press X button to save. Your PS3 should use the highest resolution among the ones you enabled.

PS: as it was said in the post before this, if anything goes wrong and you're stuck with a mode that your TV can't display, you can keep the power button pressed for a few seconds when turning on the PS3. It will go into a safe mode in low resolution where you can set the video once again.

Well in theory if your display does not support HDCP (A copy protection system for HDMI), which most DVI displays would not then that could be your issue. I had to get a HDCP removal box to connect it to my DVI only TV.

As for how to set it up there is a screen on the display config where you add checkboxes next to the supported resolutions. Be aware that not all games have native 1080i support, so if your TV do not support 720p it will fall back to SD
