Oh wow.
I didn't expect so many replies. I actually felt really silly asking the question but I'm really glad everyone gave such great answers. I was a little nervous because I kinda thought you'd make fun of me...
I've learned a lot too. I didn't know the PS3's future was so uncertain so I'll probably not choose that one. The 360 and Wii sound pretty good from the responses. I hadn't even thought about the Nintendo DS, but that sounds like a really great choice. A handheld wasn't my first choice but I wonder, could I play it with my friends if they had them? I thought I read something about wireless or something like that with it.
If I did get a DS what games would people recommend for it? Words of Wisdom mentioned a remake of Kirby Superstar and that would be really awesome! It looks like there are a lot of pokemon games out for it too, are there any that stand out?
Should I make a new thread for these questions?
Thank you to everyone who has given replies so far. Sorry if I sound a little lost but I really feel like it sometimes. I feel a little less lost now though.

Agree with majority here. If it's this gen you want it's between 360 and Wii. Look at the top games on each and decide what you'd play. Also the Ds is much more fun than the PSP(it's a rehashed PS2 with er...UMD's). If you thinking PSP, get PS2 instead, it's cheaper and most games are same.
Wait a year or so for PS3.
Pokemon Diamond & Pearl is the definitive.
The DS is cheap and it has games you will like.

The DS has pretty good multiplayer capabilities it has local multiplayer with anyone near you sometimes only requiring one DS game for multiple people to play and also has broader multiplayer capabilities if you have a WiFi connection I believe.
PS3's future isnt actually as uncertain as many make out. Its only real uncertainty is the amount of third party support it will end up getting.
Edit: Oh and as for DS games I would reccomend.
Shooter: Metroid Prime Hunters
RPGs: Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Racing: Mario Kart DS
Rhythm: Elite Beat Agents
Puzzle: Meteos
Strategy: Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Sim Game: Harvest Moon: Rune Factory
Misc: Pokemans Pearl/Diamond
(Heh, talk about varied XD)

You already got a psp. You should get DS and Zelda: PH.
DS is far beter for games
Im not going to go over a list of games to reccomend, but there are so many good games that I really dont know where to start.
You sound like you are interested in gaming with friends.......if thats the case Wii is the top choice for this. I love playing boardgames with friends on nights that we arent doing anything outside and Wii offers a lot of games that bring a really fresh addition to them.
DS is ok you can play 2 types of multiplayer, DS Download play and DS multi-cart play.
For example download play means your friends(that own DS's) can play a game with you by downloading data from a cart in your system. If you have a copy of Mario Cart DS you can play with friends without them having the cart. They are limited in character selection but can play the against you.
Multi cart play requires all players to have the same cart in their DS's.
What type of games do you enjoy? W can give reccomendations if you tell us what you like.
Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I like long games I guess. Games I can pick up and play for a bit, save, and put away are nice too though. Games that are a challenge and make you think are interesting but I don't know if I'd want a bunch of them. Advance Wars seems interesting.
I don't really dislike anything except maybe racing. I don't know why but it just seems so boring to me. Around and around and around you go.
I do like Kirby. He's cute and fun because he's Kirby!
A friend of mine just got a Wii so I probably won't get one myself until I've played with it a bit more. Still, it does seem really fun too. I'll probably try a Nintendo DS in the meantime.
Thanks for all your help everyone! Anymore game suggestions would be welcome too.

Tell your friend to get Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros Treasure. Based on your comments here you should enjoy playing the game with your friend quite a bit.
