Now that we see that with just a price cut (not even a redesign or a cut that finally made it affordable, just more affordable than before) the Wii has had quite a boost from that. Not as big as the PS3, but see the aforementioned points.
Now we have to wait to see the sales after this, but I think I can say that IGN guy was wrong when he claimed the price cut would not help the Wii.
First of all, this is NOT trying to ressurect that other thread. That was focusing on his claim of no worthwhile games. This is about his conclusion, which that other thing was merely used to support it.
But I will say that since it is just his opinion and not somethig objectively true (the main arguments there were about the appropriateness of the comment), it means that his conclusion of the Wii being doomed is faulty. It's just his opinion of the games, and even its tech.
Yet the real reason he is wrong is he refuses to see what made the Wii appealing. This comes from most of the "hardcore" dismissing the Wii. They likely didn't even see why it was a hit in the first place. So they just see how they look at the Wii, and assume they speak for the mainstream.
The mainstream does not wear baseball caps backwards. That isn't a snark. That kind of style is an urban thing, so people like him imitating it shows a desparate need to be "cool". Thus they can't see the value in the Wii because it doesn't make them feel important (thus having more gamers not like them dimishes their importance).
The mainstream doesn't need to have their egos stroked for a game. They just want to have fun. They don't feel any dimished because they have round people playing tennis, not highly detailed space marine shooting bad guys into blood splatters.
People do care about this new price. In this economy, it's just simple sense. Perhaps if Nintendo hadn't stumbled with their big games last holiday season (the mainsteam didn't care about Wii Music because they didn't see a value in it, not because of the E3 presentation), they wouldn't need this, but the point is that people are going for the Wii again. That guy's opinions won't change that. He doesn't speak for the mainstream.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
