Forums - Sony - Uncharted 2 only took 18 months to be developed

lmao @ ph4nt, you are one funny little dude....

U1 suffered the blow of being rushed.

blow from who??? you???
FF 13 and GT5 are much, much larger games than Uncharted

with much much larger budgets.
I just think you are giving ND to much credit for developing a game in 2 years.

oh sure, develope a game with graphics that are miles ahead of competition and setting at a metascore of 97 in 2 years is nothing spectacular.
If Uncharted 2 came out when Uncharted 1 did, then I would be impressed.

If Americans could send a man to Mars when the moon landing took place I would be impressed too, but sometimes you have to take into account of reality.

If I said please, do you think they'll make a Jak4??

Incidentally, that's the Amy Hennig who was behind the writing for the Legacy of Kain/ Soul Reaver games. Sorry for the OT, I loved those :)

Amazing how they can pump out one of the best games this gen in under 2 years, when it takes games like FF XIII (6 years) and GT5 (5 years)...

starcraft has been making us wait for 10 years :(

Uncharted 1 could have been much, much better with more time.

with much much larger budgets.

exactly my point, they are bigger games and the developers are taking their sweet time with it, plus SE hasn't been know for their timely releases of games.

Miles ahead? maybe a few feet. Gears 2 was made in roughly the same time and it is one of the highest rated games this gen, and noone is impressed at how quick Gears 2 came out, If it was Uncharted 1 in this position, I would be impressed, Uncharted 2 is a sequel, 2 years is more than enough time to complete a sequel, in fact i'd say 2 years is the norm for good sequels.

I would not be impressed if America sent a man to Mars today. in 1969 when we landed on the moon, I bet people were wondering where would we be 50 years from now, the answer? we were more capable of going to MArs in 1969 then we are today. Anyways, the mission to Mars would be more like FF 13 than U2, Everything will have to be built from the ground up to go to Mars much like the FF 13 engine had to be built from the ground up. Uncharted 2 is like going to the moon the second time with the same ship, only modifying it to perform better, The first moon landing took 10 years from start to finish. if the US landed on the move again 5 years after appolo, would it be as impressive? of course not, been there, done that.

Like i've said before, Uncharted 2 looks liike a fantastic game, but the development time is pretty typical.

but you have to understand how long the single player for gt5 abd ff xiii is, there single player is like 50 hours long, loll even longer on gt5 only god knows how long that it is, anways thats why and also they needed a new engine for the game

Uncharted 1 could have been much, much better with more time.

so does every game in the world

with much much larger budgets.

exactly my point, they are bigger games and the developers are taking their sweet time with it, plus SE hasn't been know for their timely releases of games.

ND was taking their sweet time with Uncharted 2 as well, the difference is they did it more efficiently.

Name one action/adventure game released around the same time can match Uncharted 2 graphically. Gears of War 2 actually has a lower rating than the first Gears of War, Uncharted 2 is hugely improved compares to the first game. sure 2 years are more than enough to complete a sequel, but the first Uncharted was in development for 2 years as well.

so you will only be impressed if ND could push the PS3 hardware to its limits 1 year after the launch??

Like i've said before, Uncharted 2 looks liike a fantastic game, but the development time is pretty typical.

Uncharted 2 is a fantastic game, in fact, it's the highest rated exclusive since SMG, and ND did a fantastic job by delivering this masterpiece in merely 2 years time, especially when so many devs are intimidated by the complicated hardware architecture of PS3; they didn't even have any serious experience with competitive online muliplayers but they pulled it off very well. If you refuse to give them credit because you don't want to then I have nothing else to say.

FF 13 and GT5 also didn't have their entire graphics engine built already and assets from a previous game on the same platform to use. They also didn't have the gameplay fundamentals already done.

It's easier to make sequels. case in point: Gears 2, Halo ODST, Mass Effect 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2.

ND were able to make U1 and U2 in less time...how about if I word it like that?

U1 suffered the blow of being rushed.

how do you figure it was rushed? It was amazing. Probably still the best graphical game this gen besides Killzone 2, Gears of war 2 or gran turismo 5.

I played Uncharted 1 because sooooo many people on this site said it was one of the best games this generation and arguably the best game on PS3. Needless to say I was extremely dissapointed, It was gorgeous, yes, but I thought it was extremely repetitive, though it got pretty interesting towards the end, and very short, in fact, waaaaaaaay too short. I classify Uncharted 1 as "good" not "amazing". Uncharted 2 however, can be "amazing"

@iBlah

You act like i'm an Uncharted 2 hater, it's actually quite opposite, I'm anti-nonsense, I don't really hate anything but I do hate it when people tout things as being impressive when they are really not. I'm impressed ND has squeezed so much out of the Ps3, but it's still just improvements over the already established graphics engine that came with Uncharted 1(and probably resulted in the quality of Uncharted 1 faltering from what it could have been). And the online multiplayer, according to reviews i've read, was essentially copy pasted from other games. While it will be great fun, and look great, it's complete nonsense to be impressed that the sequel took 2 years to complete.

Super Mario Galaxy has probably seen about 2 years of development, and will look even better than Galaxy 1, pushing Wii hardware to the limits, but while i'm impressed that they managed to get so much out of the Wii, it's still just improvements over the original engine, and I don't think anyone is impressed that it took 2 years to make Galaxy 2, in fact I don't think it croseed anyones minds, neither should Uncharted 2.
