Forums - Gaming - So tired of the violence…Am I alone is this?

I am sure we are all aware that Manhunt 2 was recently Re…um…Banned I guess in certain parts of the world. What might have slipped under the radar for most is another rather over the top violent game, Soldier of Fortune: Payback.

In SOF (Soldier of Fortune: Payback), you take on the role of one man army bent on vengeance,

“When a routine escort mission goes horribly wrong, freelance mercenary Thomas Mason finds himself battling an insidious enemy that knows no boundaries. Traditional armies can not handle these extremists – only underground guns for hire can fight a war this dirty and get results”—IGN

So many FPS fall into this niche and that is not always a bad thing. What has made this game stick out is the over the top level of violence, and by over the top I mean Siegfried and Roy, Shotgun for a Fly, and yes dare I say it Halo 3 and its hype. Just kidding about Halo 3, do not want to open up that can of worms. See below for the example,

Now do not get me wrong if I shoot someone he should bleed, common sense shows that fact. Just like rockets, you take one in the chest you are going to be in pieces. Here is where the problem comes into play. If I clip you in the arm, why should it fly off and proceed to spurt amounts of blood that would make any blood bank jealous of your supply? The human body only carries some much of the crimson tide in its veins and arteries, where do all of the extra spurts come from?

I am all for a certain level of violence in games. It fills a need the same way racing or sports might. Nevertheless, I have grown so tired of the “realistic” level of gore games go after. Just because the system can render that level of detail, does it have to? Does every shot have to take limbs off, does every nick have to be a “gusher”? Am I the only one tired of this?

Your not by yourself on this one.

What happened to all the games like Spyro and Mario where you would just charge into them or jump on your enemies and they would simply disappear?
I gotta admit Ratchet and Clank is really gonna be a good change compared to all the other shooters out there.

Your not alone but based on me experience your in the minority. My friends and I enjoy the gorefest because it looks so brutal like the chainsaw in gears. It just looks nasty that it makes the ladies skirm like it was a horror movie. I don't know but head shots in gears are very satisfying because of the gore. It would just be a plain boring headshot without it. I mean not every game has to be like this and the art direction determines how much violence and gore you want the audience to experience based on the game. To answer your question more direct, I am not tired of violence.

I proably should have phrased it better--i dont mind sme violence--but its the over the top stuff that is getting boring--its not real--it hard to get into a game when ou know its nothing like what it would be--i dont get nicked and istaly bleed out and die--just like i dont peg a guy and have his checst explode and rain down generic organs

sorry glitched me a double post

lol I loved Turok 2 because the weapons were awesome and actually did things when they hit. Still one of my favorite games. The cerebral bore was fucked up. Likewise the razor wind, even the bow was sweet after you got the explosive arrows. I didn't know about the "blow chunks off of people" part of that game before I bought it, and the first time I managed to blow off some guys head with a tek arrow, I was like "Holy shit!!! That was awesome!!" Turns out you can blow them in half, blow their legs off, blow their heads off, blow their arms off, and if you're lucky and you're using a rocket launcher or something you can blow off EVERYTHING and leave them a bleeding torso on the ground. FEAR kicks ass for the same reason, plus bullet time.

I don't really care about realism, I just figure if I'm going to kill people, it might as well be in impossibly cool ways.

Why does it matter?

It's obviously not real.  So what if Manhunt 2 took a page or two out of the Bloodrayne 2 book?

If you don't like puzzle games, don't buy puzzle games.

If you don't like platforming games, don't buy platforming games.

If you don't like gory games, don't buy gory games.

i just want a game to be realistic about  the gore ...is that so hard ?

Personally, I'm just tired of violent games, period. And that includes Halo and God of War. Certainly there's a market for them (young males) and I do enjoy playing a lot of them, but the industry just became too dominated by them by the end of the last generation. Especially war games, gosh, how many war games do we need?
Ironically, I don't mind Manhunt as it's a very niche market product. Really it should be AO though, I am disappointed the ERSB dropped the rating to M, but on the other hand, Sony & Nintendo wouldn't allow an AO game to be on their systems which, I didn't agree with either.
Thankfully, this generation is pulling in a wider audience and with it, hopefully, a wider variety of games.
