The company have a division dedicated to it. It's well known that sonys divisions are very split up.. or used to be. We are seing greater integration these days which is a good thing. Again I don't agree with you because I like how my console is able to do a lot more than gaming. I don't think they would make better products inside gaming if that were their only buisness. However, I don't think we would get the features we have now nor the integration between products that's currently happening. IE it would be a bad thing.

Well to clear things up there wasn't a problem with them being a multifaceted company it was they fact that their core business wasn't video games. I think what has been happening is that Sony and Microsoft have been bringing in their own agendas from their core business such as popularizing a new disk formate or proprietary API's. They're willing to do all of this without making any profit at all on the systems (and even make substantial losses) because their core business will benefit.
In the end some people will be satisfied with their products but maybe not enough to support those companies and more then likely a lot of customers will be left in the dust because they don't really matter in the big picture.
Technology is changing though and more and more options are popping up because of it so this really isn't all that hopeless. I guess I just miss having game companies compete with each other in grand marketing attempts that involved mascots and edgy commercials.
