average review has the same issues, but he/she is atleast trying to look at the game's qualities within the general spectrum of gaming instead of simply going to a store and buying what he say on TV and having that count as his "review".

noone's saying the customers are stupid, I'm saying they aren't informed on everything, therefore how can their decision to buy something or not be taken as a review.  They didn't make the choice based on all the possible options, they made it with those presented to them.

Yes you are, you're saying that consumers buy based on what TV tells them, sorry but you really don't know consumers then, most consumers actually do a little looking around, they may even try something before they buy it and ask people who they consider more knowledgeable, consumers are much more informed than you believe.

No game reviewers base their views on what they consider gaming, on what they consider is good, not on what people actually want, which is why there is a huge disparity this gen between the market and reviewers, especially on Wii games.

This is just laughable because you're assuming that something you like is undeniably good or rather that everyone who has bought a game has enjoyed it.

Things that people don't like don't continue selling for months and even years

Doesn't change bad games from having good legs every now and then.

Please respond to the first part.

What first part?

Not legs that last for years, a bad game wouldn't last that long, word of mouth would kill it

But it's perfectly to play and like a bad game. I fully acknowledge that Dynasty Warriors is a bad game and series, but it doesn't change the fact that I love it. I think it's tons of fun. I also think Wii Sports is a bad game, but I've spent a terribly long amount of time playing it.

I think what that shows is how videogames are becoming mainstream like music or movies. By that I mean in those mediums there is usually a large and clear distinction between the best selling movies and songs as opposed to those that actually win any awards. The serious experts in these fields usually have tastes that are completely out of sync with the general public.

EDIT: Very rarely do the yearly big summer blockbuster action films win any oscars, but they usually make a crapload more money than the oscar winners.

For clarification the wii branded games are kinda like the blockbusters, they sell alot but they probably won't win game of the year.

@Avinash_Tyagi & outlawauron

Neither sales or reviews are good for measuring quality. They can only measure public perception. The degree either of those can be useful in that aspect is also limited.

In any case I think customers are being taken for granted now. I don't think any of the companies are trying as hard I want them to. I think their all kinda just coasting right now. There is none of the intensity that was around during the 2nd and 4th generations. It's pathetic really.

Hey guys, which side should I argue? This thread looks like fun.

Now, ah, in fairness, he does have a point in equating memorability with sales. If nothing else, mroe people will remember these games just because more people have played them. Wii Sports is the most-played game this generation, and will easily be the best-remembered (or most widely remembered) in many respects.

It's true, they're just linked in the opposite direction that he thinks.  Games will be rememberred because they sold, they won't sell because they are innately memorable.

Sorry, but games wont keep selling if people think they suck, word of mouth is more effective than any marketing, there is a reason Wii gamse sell for months, even years, while other games die off

So  by your logic Wii Sports is better than Valkyria Chronicles? or Valkyria Chronicles sucks thats why it hasnt sold past a milli?

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I stopped after "Nintendo is the only real video game company".

Honestly i dont care because IMHO both SONY and Microsoft each make more games that i enjoy than Nintendo does. Hmm not bad for two companies that dont primarily focus on games...

That's cool, but I really don't care about what company makes better games.

This 'gen' is over. People shouldn't argue about it or the policies of what 'Sony' or 'Nintendo' or 'MS' seem to be. All the companies have completely changed their policies not only in the last generation, but multiple times in the last few years seeing the trends of Nintendo taking over, the world economy collapsing and their own (old) tactics failing. The old Sony and Microsoft are gone. And Nintendo changed a long time ago, producing the Wii.

People need to look to the future, and its anything but certain. Sony is completely reorganizing its company structure (not just its gaming division, but completely). Focusing on purging the overspending and 'more is better' thinking of the past (like how the PS3 and CELL technology was developed under) and focusing instead on cheaper alternatives and interconnectivity with their devices (hmm...wonder where they got that idea *cough* Apple/Nintendo).

Microsoft is following a similar path, though still throwing money at any speed bumps they come across to reach 'point B' (aka buying out companies, heavy advertising, pay-offs, etc).

I don't think I need to describe Nintendo's strategy. But the question is...what Nintendo is going to do in the future. And no one can ever guess what Nintendo will do.
