I doubt NSMB will provide the short term boost that Nintendo would be looking for in the run up to the holidays. I think a black Wii would give a better chance of that in Japan.

There already is a black Wii in Japan, and NSMB on the DS gave that console a huge boost and it released in the spring not the holidays, so NSMB will have a strong effect on the Wii this winter, not to mention the other titles that are releasing at that point

There is? Then a lime green, a bright red and a sky blue one =P

I'm never confident about software being 'system sellers' they rarely live up to the hype people put to them as far as instantaneous hardware sales go.

Wasn't the japanese pricecut something like $10 USD?

Edit: For Wii.

The Wii's price was slashed by ¥5000, which equals to exactly $56.37 USD.

for most games I would agree that just one game wouldn't be a huge seller, but this is no ordinary game, not tmention there are other games coming out in Japan this holiday which will give their own boosts to the library

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

3x increase is actually quite a bit.

Price cuts alone usually don't have a huge impact in Japan most of the time.

Hardware revisions/new colors cause bigger boosts over there. It's the opposite in North America/Europe.

I think Nintendo will have a new Wii color this holiday, either for NSMB Wii (Retro Famicom color Wii would be cool) or one for Tales of Graces probably.

I'm thinking they'll end up bundling NSMB in Japan, maybe everywhere (a new color as part of the bundle is a possibility)

It's likely that the two pricecuts have eaten each others.

@Rath: A bump in sales is visible on big games release, but the effect itself is seen only afterwards, whether the title managed to build momentum. The momentum however, is also relative to the systems overall library, where the "system selling" software just pushes the previous non-owners over the border of buying the console.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I'm not really surprised by the numbers, I'm guessing people are actually waiting for the software blitz/bundles that start up later this month.
