Forums - Gaming - Do you foresee home consoles decreasing in popularity in the West...

...while handhelds keep going up and up,just like in Japan?....or not at all?

We all know home consoles just aren´t as popular in Japan as they were in the past, for whatever reasons.

In the West they still sell pretty well generally....almost everywhere the DS makes everything else look kinda pathetic most of the time, but consoles keep on going pretty nicely, especially the Wii.

But do you think popularity of handhelds will only keep going up from now on, and maybe at the expense of home consoles?

This.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

please no. jpapan is almost dead because of that.

No. Japan just prefers handhelds.

Eventually they will, much like how laptops are overtaking desktops in the computer sphere. The issue is just about when handheld capabilities will become "good enough" to start replacing consoles. That factor has already kicked in in Japan, since their favored genres can mostly be readily handled by existing handheld technology, whereas the favored Western genres: Sports, FPS, TPS, and Open-world games cannot effectively be mimicked on handhelds quite yet. Once they can, i think we will see handheld gaming grow at the expense of console gaming, much like Japan.

The other issue is that gaming is less socially acceptable here, so something people are less inclined to play with in public, but that's slowly changing too.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

What the hell this thread is the worst cliche of one word posts and off-topic mindless remarks.

I don't see consoles leaving any time soon I just see handhelds get cheaper and rise until it's harder to mod them, then they will fail.

Honestly, do JRPG makers even realize how hard it is to save the world? That shit is impossible!

No, handhelds have other users than std consoles.
I don't see adults playing Dsi or PSP...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

This post pretty much sums it up.
