When did graphics become such an overwheling relevance to a video game? I guess I'm the only one who first saw the trailer at E3 and thought "Man that looks fun!" I also thought it ran very smoothly, I'd take 60fps over 1080p any day of the week.

I couldn't believe this thread turned into a discussion about graphics.

Why not? Its the only argument most of them have, as usual.

Honestly, what else are people going to talk about?  It's a video, a good part of it is graphics since they don't have the game in their hands.  I guess they could also talk about sound.

Blame that on the highly defensive crowd. I can make a comment like "The game has unimpressive graphics but it will be fun so it doesn't matter" and for some reason people will read the first part of that and object, asking to find a better looking game on a 2D plane which to me is pretty ridiculous. If you like the graphics that's fine, but don't call me crazy and claim these are the pinnacle of 2D graphics. This turned into a bigger debate people people don't seem to acknowledge the positive comments about the game.

Staude, how many players does Wario Land have?

I don't know. I don't care.

Wario is not Mario. That is all you need to know.

Oh and that I find their chosen art direction bad does not make me wrong. It just makes me have an opinion that might differ from yours. I don't like their psudo 3d combined with their 2d world. I think the chars look ugly and out of place, while making completely 2d chars like the old mario games would suit the game better.. and look better overall aswell. That is just my opinion. Noone is forcing you to share it. I however, am forced to look at that design if I wanna play the game.

I am not knocking the game, i'm simply stating my opinion that i'm in no way imposing on any of you who might disagree. I didn't like the look on the ds either (my sister has one and i tried it out a while back.)

Wait, did you mean you would have liked the art cirection of Wario Land, just shrunk down to fit four players?

If so, you should have stated that in the first place. Don't insult people just because you leave room for misinterpretation.

The videos showed gameplay as well. We could be discussing that.

To be honest it wasn't any gameplay we haven't seen before. Not much discussion there. Actually 9/10ths of the trailer was already shown at E3.

You'd prefer people just say "doesn't look fun"?  That seems alot more subjective.  Atleast you can fight the graphics debate with logic and argument.

I'd prefer you stop thinking of the gameplay shown in such one-dimensional terms.

We could ask things like "Does the copter work more like the cape or racoon tail?" "What about the cape and cowl outfit (at least it looks like that)?" "Are those smaller flags checkpoints or something else?" "How the hell does holding another player over your head work?" And that's just from the first 40 seconds.

Did you even pay attention to those parts?

I haven't watched it at all, only came in here due to some reports.  I just hate the idea that talking about the graphics in a video is somehow below what these forums are for.  It's a video, that means a big part of that is the graphics on display, and the idea that talking about them is bad annoys me.

I wasn't responding to that. See the bolded part.

And it isn't the graphics dicussion that's the problem. It's the ingnorance of how detail had to be sacrificed to accomodate 4 players, even more than Little Big Planet (since the action is more frentic, once you see the videos).

Practically the only thing on display here is the graphics, since this is a shot-by-shot recreation of the E3 video, probably made to show off the better graphics.

One thing I noticed is that there appears to be 3 coins hidden on each stage. Yay.

Fact of the matter is, the graphics and art direction are entirely playing it safe. It now looks very polished, but not exactly groundbreaking. Neither graphics or art are up to the level of Galaxy or Brawl, which had plenty of 2D gameplay. I'm not sure why it's a sin to want the game to have hand drawn graphics or just generally a more interesting style. Of course it looks crazy fun; it's 4 player Mario. But Nintendo themselves would probably say they are playing it safe with the graphics and art direction.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
