When Eight Days and The Getaway were announced as cancelled, there was a big backlash from the gaming community. Both games were billed as tent-mark Playstation 3 games and as such had already developed a large following. Sony announced at the time that the games had been cancelled due to an overlap in the Playstation 3’s catalogue, and if you look at the system’s lineup today you can get an understanding for the thought process behind that decision. Simply put, the Playstation 3 offers more diversity than any other system available.
Really stop and think about the bases the Playstation 3 covers: Hardcore shooter games; you have Resistance 2 for your arcade shooting needs, Killzone 2 for your more hardcore shooting needs and the upcoming MAG for massive-online-scale shooting. Action adventures games; you have Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, a game some reviewers are touting as the pinnacle of its genre. Racing games; you have the seriously hardcore Gran Turismo 5, the more casual based Modnation Racers and the in-between Motorstorm: Pacific Rift. Family games; you have the popular Buzz! and Singstar franchises. Platform games; you have the excellent LittleBigPlanet and generation-erasing Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time. Kids games; you have the upcoming Eye Pet application.
I’m not listing all these titles for fun, I’m trying to show the diversity. Playstation 3 transcends generations, it’s never been truer that there is something for everyone; and it’s exactly why the PSone and Playstation 2 were such huge successes.
Not to discredit the competition, there is no doubt that the XBOX and Nintendo Wii provide games in the similar categories as I’ve listed above. In fact, the Wii probably does family games better. In the platforming category it has Super Mario Galaxy, arguably one of the best platform games of all time. However, the Wii falls short on providing explosive action games or hardcore shooters. It doesn’t have the complete diversity. The same can be said of the XBOX, which provides the Halo and Gears Of War franchise. But where are the kids titles, the diversity in racing games and the platforming franchises?
It’s diversity that Playstation is known for. There may be games from the above list that don’t appeal to you, but they appeal to someone, and it’s by marketing the Playstation brand as something for everyone that Sony get a catch-all.
With Motion Controllers, who knows, Sony might be able to catch the Wii Fit fitness market — aswell as the hardcore shooter market with a title like Killzone 2. It transcends gender and age barriers — something I’ve only recently took notice of.
Playstation isn’t a niche – it’s for everyone. And only Sony are striding in that direction.
