Forums - Sony - Ars PSP Go review: Sony charging much more for much less

Yeah i think's it time Sony realizes what the handheld market want these day. They should not make overpriced things like this.

I think if they had included a touch screen, they really could have provided serious competition for the iPod. The touch screen wold have allowed thing like text messaging, better browsing and easier navigation. It would have made the PSP Go usable in closed configuration. Being able to flip through music or text message while closed would have been a huge feature. This was Sony's biggest omission. A touch screen would have justified the $250 price.

A touch screen would have been very, very sweet. I just sold my Touch and iPhone and loved both of them. The real reason for the success has been the insane number of apps available. That really, really adds value to the iPod. I have a crackberry from work and I love it but it doesn't have many of the way-cool apps the iPods have.

I agree and many of those apps are made usable by the touch screen. Without the touchscreen, many of those same apps would be dreadful to use.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

the other thing is that the apps/games for iPhone don't take long to download. At least not as long as PSP games.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Is the biggest complaint about the PSP go thought to be concerned with pricing?

Seems like pricing and people with older PSPs can't play their UMDS on it.

Oh well, that is true. A price cut will silence the complainst though.... it always will

Well how many users are on VGCHartz? From what I can tell, about 80% of the users here would buy a turd with SONY stamped into it (sort of a metaphor here), so you can start with those sales. It's gotta be a couple thousand.

ROTFL. I was laughing a few minutes with this one. Nice knowing you.

OT: Consider this:

Sony wants to combat the thumping it's getting from the DSi. Decides to make a slim version of its PSP. Adopts the mindset to make it download-only in the middle of the game to make it sleeker and meaner.

Realizes their fans will buy anything and praise it, they up the price tag - expect a flood of new cash because you can't buy games in stores - nor can you trade them in - and expect the new system to be a success.

They didn't learn anything - I mean anything from the PS3. It's the games, Sony! It's always been the games! And if people aren't buying the system already, figure out why you need to do to win them over. Keep the UMD format - lower the price - and release a digidownload device next gen.

I know, what does a guy have to do to get a ban around here? I don't want to ask, that would be cheating. I don't feel like I'll be a true VGChartz member until then. Ah well.

If I have to be honest, the PSP Go is VERY close to something that would be perfect for me. I have an iPhone, and I like downloading games, it's convenient for portability. But this should have had either a touchscreen or a second analog stick, it is just not quite good enough anymore to have just the one analog stick. And it should be comparably priced to a PSP, $200 MAX. When the PSP2 or PSPGoTwo comes out with dual analog and all DD, I'll be all over it. Provided it's not $400 that is.

I think the PSPgo is makes sense for people who don't have a psp, and those that have a older umd model, they don't need to buy the go, so why are they complaining? The complaints about download waiting, and no physical media don't make sense, they're positives, not negatives! I can buy games at home, download them while doing something else, instead of wasting my time fighting traffic driving out to the stores to buy games, or waiting for on-line orders to arrive. And there's no physical media to scratch or lose, or drives to break, and you can always re downloaded from PSN, no need to burn your own backups...but go ahead if it makes you feel good. It's got 16 gigs, thats quite a lot of flash memory, and that's got to add to it's cost AND value. How much are 16 mp3 players selling for right now????? Myself, I'm still undecided about buying one, I'm buying a pandora, but still considering the go also for it's remote play with my ps3, compactness, and the new and old psp games that I haven't played.

Let me pose this question:

If the next Nintendo handheld played digital DS games for backwards compatibility, but did not have a cart slot... would you buy it?

Do you guys realize that DSiWare is, effectively, the first step towards that?

The PSP Go has more quality titles readily available than any other handheld, as far as the average joe, who does not like to visit the local GameStop, and paw through the used DS pile, is concerned.  By November a huge portion of all PSP games ever made will be available in the store.

For a new consumer... that's a pretty sweet deal, I think.  I doubt the PSP Go will flop, for that reason alone.  People thought the iPhone was dumb and overpriced too.  Having all those titles available, and in your pocket thanks to the large internal storage capacity... is a pretty powerful thing.

In bold, that's a bit flawed, as the DSi can use physical media AND digital media. Nintendo made the DSi right, but Sony's jump to the PSPgo was a mistake in all-digital media. Even though you gave an example above about the next "DS" system could all together go for digital media...it's getting cheaper for flashcards to be produced and sold. The UMD was a flop in this sense because Sony tried to set another standard like Blu-Ray (don't get me wrong, I have Blu-Ray on my laptop and it's good with the NVIDIA card on it, 9600M GT with PureVideo HD, and my DVDs and my 'little' collection of Blu-Ray DVDs), but in this case UMD failed in media usages (everyone should know that). In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the next "DS" system that Nintendo makes will use GB flashcards (going by ROMs in size, some games barely go over 150 MB).

And that's where the PSP is now. DSi is more or less Nintendo making the DS more like the iPhone and PSP.

The PSP Go is the next step into that direction. Don't be surprised if one of their next handhelds is all digital media.
