Let me pose this question:

If the next Nintendo handheld played digital DS games for backwards compatibility, but did not have a cart slot... would you buy it?

Do you guys realize that DSiWare is, effectively, the first step towards that?

The PSP Go has more quality titles readily available than any other handheld, as far as the average joe, who does not like to visit the local GameStop, and paw through the used DS pile, is concerned.  By November a huge portion of all PSP games ever made will be available in the store.

For a new consumer... that's a pretty sweet deal, I think.  I doubt the PSP Go will flop, for that reason alone.  People thought the iPhone was dumb and overpriced too.  Having all those titles available, and in your pocket thanks to the large internal storage capacity... is a pretty powerful thing.

Source? I have yet to meet anyone - and I know thousands of folks - who thought the iPhone was dumb and overpriced. I actually know of at least 5 folks who have bought 2 and even 3 iPhones after the screen broke. How old are you?

I think most people thought the iPhone was overpriced at its $600 launch price. I did at least.

Although financially Go can't flop because Sony makes so much money per system. (probably cheaper to manufacture than 3000). Even if they sell under million Go's this year they already make some nice profit (over 70$ per system?)

I thought the high overhead of profit was reserved for the retailers, though.  I think the only way this benefits Sony is by eliminating used sales and controlling price points for every Go game sold.

Not at all. Retailers make next to nothing on hardware. From my experience in retail, the store made less than $10 on all hardware.

The PSP Go is setup opposite.  It has a high overhead for retailer profit in order to get them to actually sell the thing.  Retailers make no money off of PSP Go software.  This is why the actual Go hardware sells for a decent retail profit when all other hardware does not.

Well, we're seeing PSN vouchers for PSP titles show up in stores now. The new motorstorm is has a download, UMD, and voucher form I believe.

It's funny how previously people would complain about the UMD format, and how the future was all about digital downloads and not "obsolete" optical media.

Now that digital downloads are here, people are complaining that they should keep UMD forever!?

If you already have a PSP, stop complaining, as no one is going to take that away from you. If you don't have a PSP, now you have two options to choose from.

I'm sure Sony will make a ton of money selling to people who must have the latest technology as soon as it is released.

To be fair I thought the iPhone was stupid until I saw one in action (though I actually thought all phones that did more than make phone calls were stupid).  Not saying I'll think the PSPGo is anywhere near as amazing as my iPhone if I ever see one in action (which I doubt will happen since I know like 5 people with a PSP), just saying I thought the iPhone was silly when it was new.  :-p

I thought perhaps they would do this too, but when you have to get vouchers from Sony, once again they control the pricepoint and it kind of discourages retailers to make those vouchers price competitive with the Sony online PSN price.

Now that it's confirmed there's no way to transfer your old games, this strikes me as a pretty bad deal. Has any video game company ever made the format their system was built upon obsolete with a hardware revision? That alone boggles my mind.

Sony is pretty much taking the PSN/XBLA business model and applying it to an entire platform. Rather than supplementing retail releases, the service for PSP Go owners is exclusive. This is bothersome because of Sony's reputation of having infrequent sales and non-existant price drops. I can easily see why someone would buy a PSP-3000, a DS/DSi, or an Iphone/Ipod Touch. I just can't say the same for the PSP Go.

Well, every publisher determines the price of the game. It's part of the retail negotiation of what that price is. Bigger publishers can get away with smaller margins for the retailer.

I'm sure the prices are reasonable as retailers are stocking them.
