Forums - Gaming - Xbox360 RROD not 50%, apparently 30%

From the PlanetXbox360 feature study:

"Over the past couple months PlanetXbox360.com has been conducting a massive comprehensive study (online, via the phone, and in person), in an attempt to find out once and for all how many of the Microsoft loyalists have experienced the dreaded red ring of death. A recent study was posted on the internet that found 50% of all Xbox 360's had the RRoD issue, the findings of this study did not fall in line with those results. If you're not familiar with this phenomenon that has plagued the Xbox 360 since it's successful release in 2005 the RRoD happens because of a console hardware failure (from a number of different possibilities).

Only 10% of the entire survey stated that they did not return to the Xbox 360 after getting a ring of death, showing that even with the failure Xbox 360 fans stick by their favorite console, through the good and the ugly. The number we found of total Xbox 360 units that got hit with the RRoD will probably shock you, and hopefully clear this up once and for all."

Well there's a shocker.

planetxbox360.com does a study essentially saying "360 RROD problem not so bad."  I can surely trust those results... just like those old Phillip Morris sponsored studies that show smoking isn't bad for you.

I think this is actually terrible news. I thought the failure rate was at 30-35% a LONG time ago. If it's STILL 33%, that means it was even higher before newer models were out there bringing the failure rate down.

I shudder to think how bad it was in the first production runs. I guess I got luckier than I thought -- or maybe not, since I still have to listen to my vacuum cleaner of a disc drive.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

because of technical advancements our survey showed that 75% of the RRoD cases happened on an Xbox 360 console that did not have the new chipset (available in all current models)

What?

That sounds really bad! That means 25% did have the new chipset?

Of course there are way more 360s out there with older chipsets and they have been in use far longer as well! Must be some kind of mistake...

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

I thought it was 72% according to that student survey with 500 participants :D

I see it differently. If the number is 33% of all 360s sold have developed a RROD type fault then this tells me one of two things. The first that the problem initially was near 100% failure and that subsequent years have reduced this figure to maybe >5% or that the console had a high initial failure rate and was very slowly reduced to the current level of >5%.

In my case my Xbox purchased January 2006 failed July 2007 the return is still a launch item and has yet to fail. That said I am approaching the period of ownership when the last unit failed and as this unit technically still has the fault it will in all likelyhood fail again.

The other potential to inflate of course is the same sale failing repeatedly. This would also inflate the percentage overall failure rate and give the impression of larger numbers. The person who is fortunate to have 7 units fail is still only one sale.

The RROD topic needs to go away. Microsoft admitted there was a problem, rectified it (something no other console manufacturer has done), and revised the hardware to minimize future cases. Why the media won't get over it is beyond me.

Besides, anyone who's been gaming through the generations knows that consoles die (maybe not as quickly as the 360). I've had to replace my Intellivision, NES, Genesis, TG-16, PS1, Dreamcast and PS2. My 360 RROD after 3 years which is just about as long as both my PS1 and PS2 lasted. It took Sony 3 consoles to make a high quality product like the PS3. Hopefully the 3rd time's a charm for Microsoft as well.

That's your personal experience. My SNES, N64, PS2 all still work. Maybe try taking better care of your things.

30 and it seems to be going lower with the new hardware. The RROD shouldn't be as much as a problem as it used to be, that is if people try to buy newer systems instead of getting a deal on an iffy one.

So how many 360 owners on this site that experianced the RROD was contacted by Planetxbox when they were conducting this study. They can't just contact 1000 people and decide from those 1000 people that the failure rate is 30%

The other week on VGchartz someone was suggesting a 75 percent RROD fail rate.

You gotta love the fanboys.

Boots on the other foot now tho. I've seen PS3 "failure" rates for YLOD jump from less than half a percent WW to 5 percent now 10 percent. Where will it be in a months time ?

Thats the problem with the internet I guess. Hyperbole rules unchecked.

Probably in the thirties on he older machines...which is high, don't get me wrong, but M$ dedicated $1 bln to fixing the problem, and giving users a unprecedented 3-year warranty to repair the problems. It sucks for those who have had it, but 360 exclusives are worth it, as is XBL!
