i just didnt vote for u cos i didnt think you liked me..

but due to recent developments, (this thread), i see you are a good member not that my opinion really matters either way, lol.

there are only a handful of people I don't like, which I won't name as I'd rather not cause unneeded strife. You aren't one of them and I think you are a good forum member. I don't always have time to talk with everyone though.

Well I guess this confirms what you've been doing on your comp...

Former something....

Format the hard drive. You'll lose all your programs, but not your files...

If you backed up. You backed up, right?

If the harddrive is failing formating it and reinstalling windows is probably a bad idea. The drive is likely to finally kick the bucket and a $30 HDD is worth saving all the trouble of having to go through this again 3 months later.

sounds like a corrupt HDD.

Try unplugging the HDD and plugging it back in (could be a lose cable). If that doesn't work I would suggest taking the HDD to a friends house and running a diagnostics on it (or if you have a linux boot CD which you probably don't).

Odds are you don't know how to do anything I said other than unplugging it. If that doesn't work, spend the $30 to buy a new small one, and install everything. It'll save you more time and frustration rather than trying to diagnose the problem.

If anything, DO NOT go to Best Buy for their Geek Squad. If none of your efforts, Soriku, work, then take it to Staples for a diagnostic (much cheaper; like $59-69, but you could get your parents' help with it if you have to resort to that).

This same exact thing happened to the PCs in my one class for digital effects and animation; the guy behind me, his computer got a blue screen and won't go any further. Then the girl who sits to my right has a bricked computer. I don't know if it has anything to do with the OS (most likely the hardware), but they are XP computers. Figures, XP is crap.

There could be a driver problem, Soriku. My third laptop got blue screen errors because of the webcam driver. Then once the webcam stopped working, the blue screen errors stopped. So it could be the hard drive or a component inside the computer.

XP is excellent.

Cheap parts are cheap though.

that sucks... our school gives us Macs, which I hate but at least their reliable

run the check disk and if it turns up errors buy a new HDD. If you don't and you just use windows repair you are likely to have another failure soon. Typically once a HDD starts having problems you should just replace it.

If it comes with back with 0 bad sectors then you'd have to have a Mother Board problem, but I doubt it. Typically the Mother Board will outlast all the mechanical devices in your PC. HDD are mechanical and fail often, along with power supplies which are the #1 reason for catastrophic PC failure.
