Forums - Gaming - Metacritic is biased

Currently Halo3:ODST has 63 reviews with a point score of 5249. Divide that by 63 and you get an average of 83.31. The game sits at 84 on Metacritic. I am sure this is absoulutely horrible in every conceivable way since Sony extremists aren't happy it is that close to Uncharted at 97. Rounding Halo 3:ODST down to 83 would make Uncharted a much better game.

Unfortunately Metacritic isn't perfect. Halo3: ODST's lowest score of 42 isn't accurate. According to the reviewer the game deserved a 70, but Metacritic converted their C score to a 43. If you factor in the additional 28 points the review states the game would have received on a 100 point scale, the average is bumped to 83.76. This would round to an 84 which is what Metacritic states.

Uncharted is reviewing incredibly at 97.36 which rounds down to 97 since the decimal is less than half. For anyone embracing the conspiracy theory over a split decimal, you should have your game console taken away by your mom for a week. This includes the original author who didn't research and find out why a 42 looked a little odd.

Here is the real reason:

Nonsense.

There's a page on Metacritic linked from everywhere in their site, explaining that the overall score is a weighted average. We don't know the weights they're using on each source, so we can't replicate their calculation.

I don't give that much importance to the Metacritic average, but at least people should learn to read.

They're both real reasons. It is a weighted average as identified on the metacritic page. Some reviewers are weighed more than others and some reviews don't have a number review so metacritic decides what the number is. It isn't a perfect rating system and unfortunately a lot of the time games are given a bad rep because they hit 89 instead of 90 when really they are that good for the most part.

.1? Really?

If your ever in the NYC area ,let me know and I'll buy you a drink. I am sensing that you need to relax more.

I never understood why people suddenly started using Metacritic. Gamerankings always seemed a lot better to me.

Oh, the inhumanity!

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

I don't care a hoot whether it's at 84% or 94%, but rounding from 83.31 to 84 is terrible arithmetic!  Don't these self made web site folk with their secret 'forumulas' go to school anymore?  I hope ioi and the source don't round like that, can you imagine the consternation on the site?

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

The only usefull thing on metacritic is the user score.

No it isn't. The user score is awful. The number of 0 and 10 scores from people who haven't played the game is ridiculous. Metacritic has the worst user "reviews" on the internet.
