Forums - Sales Discussion - What if Halo ODST doesnt shift hardware?

I'm sure there are a lot of posters in here who intend to say the same around the release of GT5 too.

No game will produce more than a small boost anymore.

I don't get the concept where any console exclusive this late in the game, will shift hardware sales. Why would someone buy a 360 for a Halo game, if they haven't already done so? I would also like to see the case of Gran Turismo being a huge title to shift console sales. It isn't a case of games being bad, just their impact being smaller. There is a "killer app" aspect to this also. The video game market, to me, seems so mature now that it is hard to drop an unexpected killer app in it, and it make a difference.

I would expect a small boost nothing more. Like the majority of people (in here) think, not many games will sell consoles now. The 360 isn't in a tailspin and is still doing much better than what the PS3 was doing without its price drop. Its only been 2 or 3 weeks and people seem to forget that.

It won't, a lot of Halo fans own a 360.

It won't.
Don't jump all over me, but ODST to me appears more of an expansion pack than a full game. It won't shift hardware because most people that have bought it already own a 360.
Buying a console for an add-on for a game that has been out for 2 years, seems a bit silly. But hey, i'm not saying it didn't or won't move anything, saying not very much.

And @Aion

I see you've taken my slogan... Interesting.

Halo fans were already moved into XB360, if they hadn't one yet, by Halo3. Look at the charts, Halo3 gave a bump so big to even eat some of successive Xmas sales, a lot of people otherwise wanting an XB360 for Xmas simply couldn't wait. It's quite safe to guess most Halo fans already have an XB360 by now, also because this console has offered the cheapest current gen model available for a while. Nevertheless I think a bump can happen, it's a big game that adds to the already wide choice XB360 already has.

it cant, 1/3 of the people that have a 360 already have halo and those are the people that are going to buy it again....its not going to move hardware because new people wont come to the franchise for an expansion pack

The Holidays will shift hardware...

The only game to have a chance selling 360 hardware is the GTA4 episodes retail disc.

If it's marketed well it might push some systems.

Just a thought but what if Halo doesnt shift hardware sales? Apart from Forza which really isnt as big as the Halo franchise what can Microsoft look forward to to sell more hardware?

I think you ask the wrong question. The more ineresting question is what if ODST does shift a significant amount of hardware? Converntional wisdom would suggest ODST will only have a minor influence on hardware numbers for 1 or 2 weeks only; if that. But what if the conventional wisdom is wrong?

I also doubt FM3 would have a great effect on HW sales since FM2 has already introduced a consumate racing sim to the 360 gen. The only thing FM3 might do is get some people who have grown tired of waiting for GT5 to satisfy their driving sim need on the 360. Dunno how many people that would be around the world.

I think a Halo themed Xbox (probably released with Halo: Reach) along the lines of the Yakuza and FF PS3 Ltd edition models would shift a mighty load of HW for MS. Be on the lookout for this I think.
