So Sony says 1 million PS3 sold over last 3 weeks. VGC says it is 1.1 million. I understand that is because VGC claims they track PS3 fatty as well. I understand that, but honestly have 100,000 fatties sold over the last 3 weeks. If so why?

Because 100,000 people like the fatties more than the skinnies?

So the three weeks before Sony officially released the Slim on September 1st the PS3 sold less than 300,000 when the Slim wasnt available (Although it was in NA for 1 week).  Then after the Slim is released world wide the Slim sells 1,000,000 and the phat still sells 100,000.  Sounds perfectly reasonable.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Somehow I think being in third place has made the PS3 a better console than it would have been. Sony's first party is phenomenal this gen. Maybe even better than Nintendo's.

There Ps2 1st party games was significantly better last gen. Even the Microsoft 1st party was better last gen then the PS3. The PS3 has some quality games, but no where near what was on the PS2 and original XBox.

We already know the outcome of worldwide sales for the rest of the year - the Wii has it in the bag, no doubt about it.

I'm far more interested in the race between the PS3 and Wii in Japan. What is each console's YTD in Japan? Will the PS3 beat the Wii this year in Japan?

Vgcharts figures, not including this week.

Wii: 997k

PS3: 851k

YTD Japan number including this week MC.

Wii : 882k
PS3 : 837k

A comeback is impressive when you're last and finish first.

This is not like that, is it?

Any kind of comeback is impressive if it helps the industry. The PS3 selling at a MUCH higher rate does just that

How does selling more PS3 help the industry? It helps Sony to finally make some profit, down the line i hope. But the industry?

Sony is a competitor, if they are profiting, IT HELPS THE INDUSTRY. You just answered your own question.

Besides, more consoles in homes ALSO helps the industry...

It helps by making the competitors work harder to release better more profitable games. It also means more software sales for developers. Sop more money for developers mean more quality games for everyone, not just the PS3. Money mades from PS3 3rd party games could help to make games for the Wii and XBox 360; and visa-versa. So yes, it does help the industry as a whole, but not totally how you were thinking.

I disagree, sony first party this gen have made insanely good and new ip, the PS2 had/has 9 years on the market, but if you compare it date to date, the ps3 def has better first party, PS2's 3rd year library vs PS3's 3rd year library

I am not longing for anyone to cry. It's just that, well, many people will. Last year, HD twins had a fantastic line-up yet the Wii beat them up with nothing but crappiness.

Trust me, Wii will leave both Sony and Microsoft in the dust this holiday season as well. The only region I see something changing is Japan, where Nintendo has totally dropped the ball and let Sony grab all the core audience.

Again, I am on neither side. I'll line up to buy both New Super Mario Bros. and Uncharted 2. It's just that it's too late for a PS3 comeback, people need to realise that. TheSource put it amazingly simple : If the PS3 keeps outselling the Wii weekly, in 500 weeks it will get ahead...

I can understand your outlook on PS3's situation, I agree with it. But does it really matter if PS3 loses? This question is for everybody too, not just you.

in that case, does it matter if it outsells its competition for 3 weeks after getting beat up for almost 3 years? It goes both ways.

What goes both ways? Why does it matter if it loses if people still have plenty of games to play and it remains competitive. Did it matter that Nintendo got "beat up" for the last two gens?

it did as GC got no decent 3rd party support at all!

I have so far owned two 3rd place consoles last gen & this gen

for GC being 3rd place led to not much 3rd party support, for PS3 it didn't matter much so far, probably as games were already in development as they thought it would be number 1

And yet Nintendo is currently the victor. My point remains...

Was that your point?

@Red bolded

you said it doesn't matter if people still have plenty of games to play.

with GC it did matter as it lost loads & loads of 3rd party games that went to Ps2 & then xbox.......I wanted so many games, but at the end of the adverts it never said GC nor was the GC version available.

@Cgi and Darth. play nice!

Here I will contribute.

It does matter that GC and N64 got beat up last gen, it matters a lot. Just look at 3rd party support. The N64 things started going down hill, the Gamecube was almost completely ignored, and now Wii, even though it's selling like mad, has to fight for every little scrap of 3rd party support.

It does matter if Ps3 loses, because 3rd party support has steadily been going down this entire generation, I can't think of too many truly great PS3 exclusives outside of MGS4 from third parties while as with PS2 there were more games than you could count, and sales have been down, down a lot, for 3rd party software on the system.

It also matters that PS3 is coming from a very successful predecessor, if PS2 was on a downhill trend from PS1, PS3 would not see nearly as much support as it is now.

Sony is living on brand power from last generation, it's the one thing keeping them alive. Nintendo on the other hand, has to build up that brand to appeal to 3rd parties more.
