Isn't this argument getting a bit old...Nintendo has the biggest games this gen...so that logic would say it has the best marketing. Maybe gamers just prefer the game, over other "better" games out there...

But MS marketing is not extraneous to this: the game is good, but they helped it building around Master Chief a superhero mythology similar to comics heroes' ones, this appeals a kind of fanbase that's particularly strong in USA, but it is enough in Europe too so building a consistent world around the game and its characters help them dreaming better and enjoying more it. I must admit that besides not liking consoles gamepads, another reason I'm not very impressed by Halo, despite considering it good, is that I'm not into superhero mythology by any means. Or to say it better, I'm into ancient mythology, particularly Greek and Scandinavian ones, but not in modern ones, that are almost always built with marketing in mind (the series and franchise I hated most since its birth was and still is Transformers, as particularly in its early years it was so evident it was totally soulless and artificially designed to sell toys and other merchandise).
