Forums - Nintendo - Wii price drop confirmed: $199 starting this weekend

well surely they'll get " back on top" by doing both? A price cut is a good move and just makes sense and will ensure more people buy their upcoming and recent releases (personally I don't think their upcoming games lineup is as bad an assortment as some people are making it out to be...wii sport resort is selling well and they have 2 followups/sequels woteva to 2 of their biggest ever games coming out in the next few months)...it's a pretty deadly gaming season coming up after all (the ps3 lineup is looking the most impressive)

"And as a hater of Wii I don't want it to succeed."

If you were being ironic or sarcastic, then okay.

If not, you're too late. The Wii could still coast to something like 70 million systems in its lifetime if its sales don't pick up. That would still make it Nintendo's most successful console.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

good move at a good time

still, this might not be enough to fulfill their projections, but maybe I'm underestimating the impact of it paired with games like Wii Fit+ and NSMB Wii - we'll see about that

figured it was gonna happen soon. Nintendo wasnt about to let SONY and M$ outsell them this holiday season.

Long Live SHIO!

as an afterthought I think they (nintendo) also need to look at reducing the price of their older games...
Both the 360 and PS3 have a pretty good assortment of their Platinum and Classics line...the shop I went to today had a huge display of ps3 games that are platinum titles in a prominent position in the store...(which consisted of exclusive titles like UNCHARTED, Ratchet an Clank, Little Big Planet, MGS4, KZ2 etc at half the price of most of the good wii games that have also been on the market for a similar timeframe)...if I were a random guy off the street just walking into a shop to buy a console with no preconceived idea of what one i wanted, I know which machine would present itself better at this point in time!
Don't forget, a huge factor in the wii's initial success was the fact that it was the cheapest console on the market by a large magin(parents like that sort of thing after all and don't give a shit about other factors!) and now that margin is much smaller!!!

Don't get me wrong...I'm a big nintendo fanboy...I own a ds and a wii (have bought 6 wii games this year so far ...even the ones that bombed and I don't own wii fit) and like them a lot, but I don't represent the typical consumer...

Nintendo need a price cut...it just makes sense!

@1337 Gamer, It wasn't going to happen ever. Get over it man.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I think retailer bundles is better and keep fewer sku. But retailers have a habit of bundling games nobody wants.

it made sense, no matter what u say. Blue ocean or red ocean, it's just common sense to do that, they should have done it even earlier

It'll be interesting to see if Nintendo follow this price cut with a Black Wii for $199 in October/November.

OOh a christmas with a $199 Wii bundled with the new mario I can see it now, Sony + M$ will be quaking
