Forums - Nintendo - Wii price drop confirmed: $199 starting this weekend

Will this price drop be backed up with new bundles or new colours?

from the mail it seems bundles will be dependant on the retailer, no new skus....

It's going to be an interesting few weeks, that's for sure

Wii is doomed to have amazing sales.

Noooo!

"So it was true, defenders of the Blue Ocean strategy will be disappointed now.

Anyways it was time for Nintendo to do so, since interest has been going down at a steady rate for a long time now."

I still say this doesn't break it. Blue Ocean also requires a blue ocean price. If $250 isn't it, then Nintendo should lower it. If it was merely setting value at the price (which a lot of comments seem to be going on), then Nintendo could have done this at the PS3's price.

When Maelstrom put up a picture showing value and price, there wasn't just a solid point, but room for them to change until at the optimum.

why?

You people do not understand Nintendo at all. When they promise they will meet their projections they actually mean it. Not like Sony for the last decade.

If for no other reason they bump their market share, or keep it at 50%, after the launch of the competitors motion controls they have done their job of securing the tail end of this gen.

This price drop doesn't really have anything to do with Sony not meeting their projections "for the last decade".

I would understand if you were brining up Sony to compare the effect of Wii's price drop versus the one on PS3, but I don't think what you have said here is really necessary.

I didn't say that. I mean in general Nintendo promise in their projections what they can achieve. Sony (the whole thing, not just games) overestimated their projections for a long time, thats the comparrison i am making.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

im confused. can someone pleaseee explain to me why "this sucks?"

I was expectin Wii to get back to top with something more than usual price drop strategy.
Like maybe some games?Revolutionary motion games?
And now starts Wii vs Ps3 threads.
And as a hater of Wii I don't want it to succeed.

Nintendo runs one business and the whole company is centered around running two videogame systems right now, SCE alone is two times larger than Nintendo in terms of employees and they have three systems on the market right now as opposed to two from Nintendo. And the whole Sony is around ten times larger than SCE so you can only imagine how hard it would be for any company on that scale to project their yearly sales precisely.

And again, Sony or SCE's projections are not related to this price drop in any way, and I think it's best for people to wait and see how effective this price drop will be considering, unlike PS3, price has never been a big issue for the system.

Did people really expect it to stay at launch price forever?
